Was at the gas station this afternoon grabbing some smokes and a soda, walk out and this guy is drooling over my car. He tells me his brother has a Mav with 302 with the same small bumpers. Goes on and on about how cool this car was. So, I pop in and ask if he knows if his brother was planning on selling. "Yep, he don't like Ford's no more" was the reply I got. He told me about where his brother lived. Never have I been able to get the tire to break loose on the Comet, but since I gutted it yesterday(repairing the little floor rust). Driving down the road and this guy runs out to the street and is flaggin me down. Found the house, I said to myself. Sure enough, there she sat. OK, heres the story I got from the owner. The prevous owners had a Grabber and wrapped it around a telephone pole, they went out and found another Mav, took motor and tranny outta Grabber and put it in the 71 Mav. It still has the 4 lug rear and front. It needs a few things, bucket seats, door panel, kicker panels, rear panels, and a under dash tray. Now tell me is it worth $1500. Current owner says he has the title in pawn and would get it after the sell. Do I risk it?
Oh, looks to me like there is little rust on it, but the grass was pretty tall and I could not get under the car.
Hard to say without looking at it.....is it a 8 or 6 ? Pour a gallon of water down the cowl vents and see if it leaks or not, if it does, you know that's a big repair. I'd want to look underneath at the floor pans and frame torque boxes, they're prone to rust also. Did they keep the Grabber spoiler and sportlamps and put them on it? And what would your plans be if you got it? Stock? Hotrod? That would factor in too, the more you want to do to it, the more you might need to change......
Agree with all things above. On the title, if he wants $1500 and the title is in pawn better ask to go with him to get the title from the pawn shop. Don't want to hand over $1500 and never get the title. Just my thoughts. - Matt
He pawned the car? Sounds like he doesn't have very high regard for the car since most times pawn brokers end up owning the things that are pawned, and usually for a fraction of the value. Sounds high to me. I am sure you can negotiate him to his bottom line, since he is losing it anyway. Your call. I don't know how many others Mavericks or Comets are available in your area. If you think it is something you want and can afford, it is up to you. Jim
If you choose to buy it, I would definitely go with him to get the title. If he starts to make up excuses, I would pass.
Not to accuse anyone but a lot of scams start out with "give me your money and I will go get what I am selling you". Keep in mind that you didn't go looking for them either. They kind of came looking for you. Just saying to be very careful - at least, bring friends with you so you will have a witness to the transaction. Absolutely go with him to get the title and maybe line up a way to get the car home at the same time. Keep an upper hand.
