Is it pretty much a garuntee that a 76 ford granada has a 9 inch rear end? How can i tell the diff between and 8 inch and a 9 inch before i go pulling it off on saturday
The 8 inch is oval in shape and the 9 inch is more round. Also if you can use a socket on the bottom 2 nuts it is an 8 inch.
Only lincoln style granadas had 9 inchs and there disc brake. I might be wrong but thats what I found.
I seriously doubt its a 9". The socket test is the easiest way to tell as suggested above. Check the pictures. You can see how all the bolts are easily accessible on the 8". The pinion on the 9" drops down in front of the bolts in the bottom left corner. You cannot get a socket on them. You have to take them off with a wrench.
Yeah, I had the same problem trying to spell it when doing ebay searches, and half the ones I've seen on ebay, the owners couldn't even spell the name!
NO Granadas and Monarchs did have 9" rears available. There is no rhyme or reason as to which got them and which got the other 2 available rears, but you can find the 9" in some of them. They are primarily drum brakes, however, the discs were an option on Granada/Monarch too. I got a 9" out of an 81 (last year of the non-Fox body) Monarch. AND IT WAS A 6 CYLINDER CAR! Like I said, no rhyme or reason. It sure didn't need a 9", but it had one. That was the last year they were available and Ford was throwing them in anything to get rid of stock. If you do find a Granada 9", you are gauranteed a very high gear ratio though. They are somewhere around 2.50:1! Don't even think about getting T-Lock either... The yard I got mine from got all their pricing from an industry software program. The program said that the only rear available in Granadas and Monarchs was an 8"... So I got a 9" for 8" pricing! It didn't even offer the user the ability to consider it was a 9"... which is great for us! 75 bux!
I believe it ford was good for using up old stock. As I said over the yrs I never found any 9`s in a granada not to say it wasn`t possible. Did find a couple of the lincoln disc ones. Will be sure to look a little harder when granadas are found in the yrds. Good info ya learn somthing every day
I stand corrected... Or at least the yard I got the rear from... They mark their cars with the year on the windshield. The car was a Monarch I6, and it was marked 81. They must have gotten it wrong. Must have been an 80 model.
There were 4 possible rear ends in the '75-'80 Granadas/Monarchs: 1. 8-inch drum brake rear end. 2. 8.7" drum brake rear end (integral-style rear end with bolt-on rear housing cover). Not a good performance choice. 3. 9-inch drum brake rear end. (factory option) 4. 9-inch disc brake rear end (same rear end as '77-80 Lincoln Versailles). (factory option). Some of the 9-inch rears had 2-pinion Traction-Lok differentials. Some had the stronger 4-pinion Traction-Loks. Most, however, had single track (open) differentials. In the 9-inch rears, there were only four ratios choices from the factory; 1. 2.47, 2. 2.50, 3. 2.75, 4. 3.00:1 This is a 9-inch (formerly drum brake) rear end that I got from an '80 model Mercury Monarch. http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/6673/monarch9inchsb5.jpg I used this rear end as the basis to convert it over to Cobra rear discs for my '68 Mustang. http://www.ultrastang.com/images/2006/cobrabrakehosemount0243cf_2.jpg www.ultrastang.com
