My son came across a 1965 Ford 289 engine that came out of a Ford Galaxie. He is going to try to rebuild it as a learning experience. If he is successful, he would like to put the engine in his 1974 Maverick. The Maverick currently has a 200 CI I6 with 3 speed manual.. The Galaxie had a 3 speed manual on it too. Once he puts the 289 in the mav, he's going to rebuild the 200.

He has disassembled the engine, and so far, other than carbon buildup and gunky oil buildup, it's in pretty good shape. What can he expect during the rebuild? What kinds of neat inexpensive modifications should we consider? Will the 289 fit in the Mav? What problems should we look out for?

check to see if there are 5 or 6 mounting bolts for the tranmission bellhousing to bolt to. 65 was the transition year. if its a 5 bolt block then you will only be able to use 4 bolts to attach it to the trans and thats not enough.
while your going through the motor its a good time to put an biger cam in. a simple port match on the heads will help.

If the 289 doesn't have all of the pulleys the Maverick needs that might give you trouble also as the 289 probably has a 3 bolt harmonic balancer pulley
