    Hi all,
I am changing my Maverick from the column shift automatic to the floor and I have a couple questions about the neutral switch and the back up light switch. I know where the neutral switch goes on the transmission and what it does, but I don't know where to wire it up to from the only neutral switch (one on the base of steering column next to firewall-correct??)Anyway, how do I wire that up, and how do the reverse lights become activated from the floor shifter? Is it the same switch as the neutral? I think it is, but I may be wrong. The backup light switch on the column is at the base, (combined with neutral switch it seems...) Anyway, some help would be really appreciated. Also do I need to get a Column lock rod? Eventually I need to get a steering column with the 1973 style plugs and no shift mechanisms. Anyone have one in good shape? Thanks.

I just left all that stuff unhooked when I did my floor shift conversion. If you find out how to hook it up let me know. Some tracks won't let you run without a neutral safety switch so I may need it someday. YThe track on my side of town dosn't check but if I want to go to Firebird Raceway I need the neutral switch.

Does anyone know the anwer to my problem?

    Hi guys,
I thought maybe I would get more responces and that would help make this whole floor swap less overwhelming. Back to the books I guess, unless anyone knows the answer. Anyone????? The help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot for all your help.

Corbin; I am in the process of getting this to work now, so I will tell you what I know. In your 73, the neutral safety switch and backup lights are on a switch that is on the transmission, if I am not mistaken. It is a half moon looking thing. If not, then it is on the steering column, and has to be moved to the trans, or use microswitches (if you are using a B&M shifter, they come with them). I have a '70, and the linkage has no slot for the switch dog to fit in, and had to get a manual shift linkage from a '74 C-4, and it works fine. You have to extend the wiring from under the dash, but that is easy. Just ensure the splices are good. If you find a later car, the harness should unplug and work fine. Hope this helps, and most of all, hope it is entirely accurate. I am having a trans shop do mine, due to lack of space. Let us know how it works out.

    Thanks Earl..

Thanks for the info. Mine is on the column, so I need to get one for the transmission, correct? The one on the column won't bolt to the transmission, right? Anyway, thanks for the help. What is a switch dog? Is it the thing that activates the back up lights? I don't think I have that. Thanks, and I am using a Mustang floor shifter, btw.

    which wire goes where

I forgot I had this question so I don't remember the color of the wires now but I know they arn't the same color selection as the switch I bought. I think it was white, black/redstripe, lime green and purple. The new switch has two red/yellow stripe, a white one I think and some other color. I also found another ford shifter that has a switch in the shifter unit itself.....however it has six wires instead of four.

So let us know where to put wat wire if you know.

    Here is the switch..

Here is the floor shift auto neutral switch for a mustang C4. It should work on a Maverick. So I need to get on of these, and a reverse switch, or is the reverse switch built in to this switch? Thanks.

Corbin; that is the correct switch. Just find the wiring to the column shift neutral safety switch, and extend the wiring to meet the wiring on the switch. If your trans is like mine, you may need the manual shift lever to get the dog slot. The dog is the little bump in the inner hub of the switch. It fits into a slot on the shift arm, so the switches are activated when the trans goes in and out of gear. There is a place here in Atlanta called Transmission Parts Unlimited, and if you can't find one, they will get one from a junk unit. Best to go to a junk yard, so you can verify it is the same stuff. Hope this helps, let me know if I can be of any further help.

    Thanks Earl...

I will definitly ask you if I need any more help. Thanks a lot. I assume the Mutang wire colors are different than the Maverick, so do you know which on the Maverick connect to which on the Mustang one? Thanks a lot.

Corbin; go to Charlie's site, maverickgrabber.com, and get his wiring diagrams. They are for a '70, but all years should be similar. We will just have to pick this out, and wire in the switch. I will do this this weekend, and let you know. If you find out ahead of me, let me know.

    Thanks Earl..

Thanks a lot. I won't get it connected this weekend, so if you let me know what hooks to what after you're done that would be great. Thanks again.

Corbin, not yet. Been extremely busy, and will be out of town this weekend. But, I will find out, and get back to you. I would think the wiring would be the same, but you never can tell.

I might try to tackle this problem soon as well. Things are a little busy, so it won't be for a couple weekends. I'll let you know. Thanks again.
