Finally got an opinion to restore my maverick to literal magazine quality standards. Keep in mind, this is from a recommended shop that specializes in this. I still have to look at more of their work, but it comes highly recommended.

consider my maverick has some rust in the 1/4's which must be cut out.

This will be a complete tear down to the bare shell, every last bolt and nut off, then blasted clean, and built up from there.

Grabber blue going back on. Quote includes restoration of all chrome, and deletion of the trim along the sides, including a coating (forgot what it's called) in the trunk, under the hoods, and those kind of places.

This does NOT include the drivetrain (that will be supplied by me) or any interior work.

He's really excited about doing a maverick, and states the quality will be easily good enough for any mag. He said because he's excited to do a maverick (he usually get's the usual run of muscle cars, stangs, camaro's etc) that he will sponser me, and take about 3 grand off. (in return I allow him to show it on occasions etc.)

10 grand out the door for him to return it in rolling show condition painted inside and out, all chrome redone. I supply the drivetrain (which I have) and interior.

    opinions??

If the work quality is as good as you say it is, I'd say thats a pretty good deal.

Thats cheap I help a friend of mine who does full resto`s and I can tell ya rust takes alot of time to fix but we get PA cars which are normally rust buckets. If thats with chrome and reassembly it sounds to good .Get it in writing and a time frame for how long it`s gonna take .I`m gonna guess a year.Good luck with it Chris

and also the "get it in writing" part. even then they may try charging more at the end, so part of the writing should list what work he has stated he will do panel by panel. that way at the end when he wants more he can show you the list of what your paying more for. if you got the money though, the msrp on a focus is 11k id rather have the new mav.

That does sound like a great deal .... When my car was in the shop we set up a deal that I would pay him in increments. My down payment on the job was equivalent to materials cost. I then paid him as progress was made on the car with final payment due at delivery. Definitely don't plunk down a big chunk of $$$ initially ... you gotta keep him motivated. Good luck!

FYI .. using this method he had my car for about 8 weeks or so .. This was a body shop that mainly fixed late model insurance repairs ... so they weren't working on it full time .... And my car was only paint and body smoothing with minimal dissassembly and reassembly.

he's already itemized everything out detail by detail.

he said we can stretch this out over a year if I'd like.

he wants the money in thirds, some now, some later, and some at the end.

his excitement is geniuin (sp?) on wanting to build my mav. Wants to document it, photograph it and everything.

resto will be a clean job. grabber blue throughout, with the grabber hood and tail parts, no other fancy paint scheme.

deletion of the chrome/rubber trim around the sides, Maybe other stuff (door locks or handles, etc, that's all in the air)

he has a lead on custom wheels like what chip foose does, design and make our own, he says $2500ish for that, but I don't think I want custom wheels that bad.

it'll be lowered with a slight rake to the back, a 5.0 roller block slightly warmed for now, with a lopey cam.

thanks for the input all, I'll keep you posted. The reason I haven't spun a wrench on this car in 15 years was to wait for a moment like this.

best part is My mother is paying for the complete job!!!!!! (except I have engine and interior duties). I'm likely gonna have to sell my fox mustang that I've been working on for the last year, and have owned for ten years already. However, this project is more imporant than my stang.

Jeremy ... I just noticed you are in California ... would it be more economical to pick up a rust-free car locally and have him restore that ... would save quite a bit on the body work hours ....

I can't advise on the price (which sounds a little high to me but you're in CA -
different market), but have you considered buying an existing 'Show Quality'
Maverick for about the same price instead?

$10,000 would buy you a very nice Show Quality Maverick - without the wait
    and fear of getting burned.

i don't think 10 grand sounds like a bad deal to me. that is including paint, body work, and rechroming all the pieces to show quality. complete disassemble and reassemble, and if it includes frame and suspension.:)
