i drove the mav around this morning....about 95 degrees or so about 9-10 am... and it never went above 195 stopped at lights.....driving...it stays about 185ish.. the prob is over triple digits temps....that when it gets hot....so the cooling system works....jsut not 100% efficient.... i had to take the blazer to get the tranny rebuilt...1500 bucks later....the mav water pump is on hold....so until then i just try to keep moving when i drive hom from work... so...there ya go...it works...not the greatest...but as soon as we move out of arizona...i bet it wont ever over heat again.... thanks
From the what-its-worth dept, Autozone has water pumps for as little as $15.99 for your car. see http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=C001&UserAction=performMoreDetail&Parameters=TRUE%7C%7EWATER+PUMP%7C%7E%245.00%7C%7ECARDONE%7C%7ENONE%7C%7EFALSE%7C%7EFALSE%7C%7E196477%7C%7E1553%7C%7ES58-204%7C%7ENONE%7C%7E%2415.99%7C%7EFORD%7C%7EMAVERICK%7C%7E1971%7C%7E1+YR%7C%7ENONE%7C%7ENONE%7C%7EB I can usually find that much between the cushions and the sofa (after my wealthy friends have come to visit). That and a good Raidiator flush might do the trick. Good luck.
I hate to say this, again, but I am driving in 100 degree weather in TX, only ours is stuffy and humid, and temps flow out of radiator coolers slower here. That job with drilling 6 evenly spaced 1/8" holes around my 160 thermostat, even though it was the quick fix, really did the job. I drive right at 180, maybe 185 at red lights, and right back down to 180 within 10-20 seconds after I take off. If you wanted to do it right, after you pay for the trans work on the CHEVY Blazer, BeCool makes a hi-flow thermostat in 160 and 180, $19.99. It just has a bigger hole and opens wider for better flow.
ok there are a lot of comments....so i will try and get them all the radiator is a new 4 row.... and the water pump is a new stock water pump... i think the prob is i dont have enough water flowing... i didnt drill the holes drill in this one..( i didnt see the need since it was a high flow already)....and i have a robert shaw 180 degree...so it is high flow...high performance.....i got it 2 weeks ago as far as the max out temp...i dont relaly want to max it out....i am afraid that it will blow the radiator apart....and i cant afford another 200 bucks or so for an aluminum radiator.... of course i would love to buy an aluminum radiator...my wife has already said " didnt you just buy a new radiator..." thanks for all the comments once the tranny in the blazer is fixed i am buying the miloden alum water pump from summit....85 bucks i think jaime...its not that bad....i mean after all...where else can you wear shorts in the winter? the coldest it gets here is 38....and it is hot in the summer.....but its mostly HEAT.....( we only get 3 months of monsoons) and they dont happen every single day...so the day after monsoon storms it will be over 103 and 75% humidity... but like i said...thats only 3 months out of the year... i have been to atlanta....ky...tn ....so i know humidity...and i dislike it...my wife wants to move to davenport IA early next year....and i am not really looking forward to the weather out there....but at leat i can go to the car shows like you all do...
jamie and all others. don't believe him. it's like hell here. don't come. stay away. the darn property values are going higher and higher.
My maverick got up to 205 the other day... I have a 160F thermestat and a Grifith Aluminum Radiator... and a Be Cool electric fan pulling 2700cfm I think. and it's only a 289...
i can handle 205.......but when mine goes over 210....it starts out of control expenoentially... if i dont shut it down...it will go from 210 to 225 in 30 seconds..... and after that i dont know....i dont want to find out....boiling water means high pressure...high pressure means bye bye radiator
205 is fine David74Maverick. STManser, yours sounds like mine. never did figure it out, I'll get back on it soon. I'm wondering about a restriction in the block. I wouldn't put $85 in a waterpump to do something a stock waterpump should do. I'm convinced, at least in my situation, the problem lies elsewhere. If the water moves too fast, it can't conduct the heat, can't move the heat into the radiator efficiently.
so i am not the only person that has experienced this?? hmm....well.....how many people have had this problem....and what worked...i have done almost everything that the forum has suggested.... the moving part will come soon enough...and then maybe i wont have to worry about it...but right now i do need this cooler.... thanks for the help 74Merc
Your problem is very unusual. With a new 4-row radiator, new thermostat, new waterpump, and a fan shroud, your car should be running cool all day long. Problems like yours usually occur when the engine has been excessively over-bored. Are you sure your gauge is reading correctly? You might want to hook up a different one and see what it reads...
Your first post said "the mav water pump is on hold". I'd better slow down on the Texas Kool-Aid 'cause I'm missing sumpin. Either way, good luck and keep us updated with what finally worked for ya.
