I bought a 302 to swap into my maverick and I am trying to buy parts for it. I have no idea what year it is or what it came out of. This number was stamped behind the L/H cylinder head where the bellhoushing meets the block, 9Z677034 There is a spot where the dipstick went into the block but there was also a spot on the timing cover that had been pluged with a bolt. i took the dipstick ut of the bolck and put it in the timing cover. I have no idea what is factory. Some guy had this 302 a c-4 and a 9" on a ranger he was going to drag race. I got the whole setup for $400. The 302 has a mild cam and a wieland dual-plane intake. The c-4 is stock but the rear is posi with 4.11 gears.

drop the starter and there should be a series of lettere/numbers,right above on the block.if i remember right the first two will tell you the year of the block.someone on the board should be able to decode it for you.if i remember right "c"was for the 70's blocks.example:c 3 would be a 73 casting.(if i got the letter for the year right.)good luck.
