Background: I have the '74 Mav with a 250. I'm trying to restore it to original with my son. The previous owner butchered the vacuum lines and put the wrong carb on the engine. I've got a rebuilt Carter RBS carb and am trying to setup the vacuum lines as original. I found out today that I have a distributor in it D7BE 12127DA that isn't the original for the '74 either(used in 75-79 Mav's) and only has one vacuum advance port. I posted the vac advance port question in the Parts Interchange forum. Question: I am beginning to wonder whether he dropped in a different 250 engine on me. How can I tell, as there isn't a tag on the valve cover (he spray painted them and removed tag)???
I agree on the Electronic Ignition. I used to be a pretty good points setter in my day, but it was frustrating. But, I want to get the vacuum system put together right so that the car with its rebuilt RBS will run smoothly. How do you identify the year and model engine without the valve cover tags?
My newly rebuilt 250 longblock is being delivered tomorrow. Once I have it on the engine stand I'll check it out and let you know where the numbers are stamped on the head and block ...
Did you find anything that would help me identify the year of the 250 engine in my '74 Maverick? Ralph
