i want to change to a serpentine setup on my 302 i need the water-pump pulley. i cant seem to find one that fits. i have the old reverse flow water-pump on the car and the studs are closer together than the studs on a more current water-pump. what do you have? i will buy your stuff or take any advice you can spare. is there a different water-pump i could use? any help would be appreciated.
The old water pumps are standard flow, new ones are reverse flow. The grooved water pump pulley you need for a standard flow pump comes from an 80's Crown Vic/Marquis with a 5.0. They're not easy to find, took me 6 months until I found a guy on another forum that had the whole set for sale for $40. If you're planning on using a late Mustang crank pulley they are a smaller diameter and the wrong length to use with the Crown Vic wp pulley. Some guys just run the Complete Mustang setup and use the smooth wp pulley. Ford changed the distance on the wp pulley mounting holes in order to keep the pulleys correct.
i have the full mustang setup, but the mounting holes are wider apart than the mav. waterpump. how do i address this?
The pulley mounting holes are purposely different in span depending if the the pulley is intended for a standard rotation pump or a reverse rotation pump. They do that so you don't run the wrong setup and turn the pump backwards. You are wanting to put a pulley for a reverse rotation pump (Mustang 5.0) onto a standard rotation pump (Maverick). From the factory the only serpetine wp pulley that bolts right on to a standard rotation pump is the 80's Crown Vic/Marquis, that I know of. I've heard rumor that there might be a 5.0 TBird pulley or an F150 pulley that would bolt on but I've never seen it myself. And I have no idea if the diameters and lengths would be correct. Plenty of guys use the Mustang 5.0 pulley set with the smooth reverse rotation pump pulley on a standard rotation pump without problem. The only way to mate that pulley to your pump is to slot the holes. Edit: There are some aftermarket ribbed wp pulleys that bolt on to a standard rotation pump, ASP, March, maybe others, but they're $$$. Cheapest I found was from Summit for around $65. Sometimes you see them on ebay, too.
I should have one in the garage from my mustang before underdrive pullies. If you can wait I can take a look for it this weekend. A 5 spot and the ride would be fine with me for price. Or get on your local mustang board, I sure one of them guys has one sitting in the garage as well.
I used this setup (not my motor) on my grabber. You have to open up the tensioner flip the spring and drill a new hole for the spring. Stock mustang setup
