I recently replaced the altenator and voltage regulator on my 74 mav 200CI L6. The other day the battery was completely dead. It wouldn't even jump start. I replaced the battery and it cranked right up. Yesterday my wife gets in the car and the new battery is dead. It jumped off this time. Other than the obvious answer that I may have a bad rebuilt altenator, why would I be having this prob?
Also... I noticed that the black and red battery cable insulation is cracked. Could this cause any problems?
its prolly the cunudder valve for the a$$ hole plunger turn your lights off battery will go dead not sure , might be alt. not sure
With everything turned off connect an ammeter in series with the battery and see if something is drawing current. Had a minivan once that would start fine all day long after a jump, but let it sit overnight and the battery would be dead. Ended up being one of those lighted vanity mirrors in the sun visor wasn't turning off when the cover was closed.
I replaced the voltage regulator on my yellow mav (nothing was wrong with it other than dirty) and I had the same problem...might be a bad regulator.
If you don't find anything clearly wrong, but find that with everything off, you still have a slow drain, get under the dash board and on the right hand side, near the fender, is the door buzzer (you hear it when you leave your key in the dash and open the door with the engine off). Tear it out and throw it away. They are notorious for draining a battery, even with the key off and doors closed, etc. When they wear out, they sort of short, causing a slow drain on your battery. Mine would drain over night, but I never found it until I turned everything off and put a bettery tester on the batter, and saw a very slow drain, barely registered on the meter. Tracked it to the dome light circuit (if I recall correctly) and tested the door switches, then the buzzer. Found that the buzzer was the culprit. Good luck. Electrical problems can be a real pain...
