egr valve

    I'm new in the world of cars and I need to know if my 73 maverick with a 302 has an egr valve because I'm switching it two a four barrel

    I forgot what year they started putting them on the mavs but I can`t tell with the air cleaner on it , if you have one it will be at the base of the carb . Do you need to pass the smog tests if not you can do away with the whole thing any way but you`ll need to re time you`r engin to make it run 100%

    Yes, the '73 has an EGR valve and unfortunately, it runs full time instead of only at idle and low RPM like the later models do.

    It is basically incorporated into a spacer under the carburetor baseplate and the vacuum connection is in the back. It is very easy to remove and you will need either a 1-inch spacer or shorter studs to mount the carb. It won't fit on a 4-barrel intake manifold. Unless you live in California, you will have no trouble passing emissions inspections without it. They do not measure oxides of Nitrogen, only Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbons, which have nothing to do with the EGR. Your car is old enough that they won't even do a visual inspection on it...
