Hi everyone!!!! Just wondering if the 250, Carter RBS, Auto, Comet -74 came with or witout EGR valve and did it come with or without Electric Choke assist, plunger solenoid..? I´ve not got any of these so that´s why I wonder, can´t seem to get any idle once the engine is warm and trying to rule out at least something!!!! Thank you all!!!! Robert.
not haveing egr should cause it to not idle. i dont know what your car should have or not but what does it have for a choke if anything?
EGR came out in '73. The RBS has a Throttle Solenoid Positioner (AKA Anti-Dieseling Solenoid) http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/diagrams/untitled069.gif The way I understand things only the California cars got the elec choke. My '74 PBS is not electric choke.
Hm... Then I need one I guess, I´ve got a USA made Comet, what does it do exactly..? Thank you very much!!!
I have not got the Throttle solenoid or elec choke, just the simple auto choke housing to mess around with... Thank you for helping out!!!
I have tried and tried but can´t get a descent idle, I have just got the automatic choke house setup setting it to 1 mark richer... Thank you very much!!!!
the egr valve circlates exhaust gas into the intake to be reburned in the hopes of having a cleaner, more fully burned exhaust. p would just plug it off if i were you. unbolt the EGR put an piece of aluminum over the hole in the intake and bolt the EGR back down to hold it in place. thats wa i usually do. in most cases i can get a better running car with out EGR
Ah, okei... Then I can forget about blaming the EGR for my bad idle!!! But thank you for sorting this out!!!!
my first impression is that the idle screw is set to low. there is usally a fast idle screw on the choke that bumps up the idle while the choke is on. when the choke opens the fast idle screw come off its cam and lets the idle screw determine the amount of throttle opening. so my sugestion is to raise the base idle screw to open the throttle blades to where it runs when warm. this is assuming that this is the problem.
Yeah I put the fast idle screw under the first cam (the high cam?) to get a good fast idle when cold, it seats fine when I push the throttle to the bottom before I crank it over, but as soon as it gets warmed up and I mess with the curb idle it doesn´t seem to make any difference, can´t really get it to idle high enough even when cold and the fast idle is set properly to the cam... I got a sheet metal plate under the carb (is that common btw) and I don´t really know what that is supposed to do or if it´s something homemade..? Blocked of every vaccum line and set up a vaccum gauge to the manifold to see if it stays in proper limits... sprayed the base of the carb with squirts of water and there seems to be no leak there either... The carb is almost new so I must be missing something here... Thank you for your thoughts on this one!!!!
I´ll get right on it in the morning and see if I even have an EGR mounting on the base of the carb...? Everything except the brake master and the idle problem then I think I will be set for driving!!!! Thanks!
the sheet metal plate is a heat sheild to try to keep heat out of the carb. im thinking that the idle circut in the carb is partialy plugged up. when you take the carb off, turn it up side down over a bucket to catch the gas and look around the throttle blades. there should be slots that the blade partialy covers. i would spray them with carb cleaner then compressed air and retry.
