i will be performing a multi-port EFI switch/conversion on my 73 maverick within the next two weeks. i am "mechanicly enclined" enough to perform the switch but just wanted to know if anyone else has done this before.... just some basic tips and stuff to be aware of. as for my maverick, it's a 73 4-door and an original V8 car with less than 68,000 on the clock. i am also looking for some bucket seats if anyone has any for sale..cheap. email me at ford_mustang67@hotmail.com or ford_mustang289@yahoo.com

Hey Mean_Mav, I have a 73 4 door also and I'm from Elizabethtown, Ky. There are a bunch of great people here and a few frome Ky. Where is Irvine? Anyways, there are acouple people on here who have done this change and I've been looking into it also. There is a guy that goes by MavMark that has a real nice set up. Maybe we can get together. I think some Ky. boys and are going to meet up with some Ohio boys in a few weeks around Cincinati if you are interested. Ward

    Welcome to the board.

    1) Study the Fuel Relay actions during KOEO and KOER. That is what gave me the most trouble. The pump would run during KOEO but not during KOER (it took me a month of Sundays to figure that one out)

    2) Fabricate a platform (of sheet alumimum) underneath the right hand side of the dash to mount your EEC (and other electronic modules).

    3) Go with MASS Air vs Speed Density

    4) Don't forget to weld the 02 bungs on BEFORE putting the headers on  (or whatever exhaust you go with). I wound up not using mine afterall (drag race application).

    5) If using a donor harness, identify and tag EVERY wire at both terminals BEFORE putting it in the car.

    6) Cut off as much of the unused wiring as possible (I'd still tag them though) and use a butt connector on the ends to keep from grounding.

    I'm sure there's plenty more I'm forgetting.

    Good luck!

    Hi Rick.

Big difference between what he is wanting to do than what you did.
Going EFI on an old 302 brings with it a bunch more changes.
The fire order vs the EEC 5L order is different.
Fuel injection wiring is different, all based on keeping the original cam.
Then the OX sensors will never quite work as intended in controlling the fuel.
There a lot to it unless someone wants to know what it all about.
The dist. may need to be made up with a 5L housing and early shaft, gear etc.
Better to install a complete 5L motor and not have all these issues besides the fuel pump, lines and tank pick up.

I figured he knew about the distributor - but your'e right, I hadn't thought about the firing order and how it relates to the older cam.

re: "better to to install a complete 5L motor"
    AGREED
