I'm just about to have a custom dual exhaust installed. I'm also in need of a gas tank. I have a few options. One is to install a fuel cell in the trunk, (16 gallon one is pretty cheap) and just run dual exhaust with one tip on each side. Or, I know that there is a modification to intall what I believe was a mustang gas tank that is more centered and the exhaust will fit on either side of the tank. Or, I can just replace the tank with a stock one and run the two tips both on the right side. I was thinking with a double chrome tip "ala Ferrari". Of course in any case the exhaust will have an H-Pipe. Anyone got any pics?
I have 2.25 pipes that clear my stock tank okay. Some people use 2.5 pipes and still have decent clearance. Dennis (Mavaholic) installed a tank from a 65-68 Mustang, not sure what year. It is a little narrower I believe, and the fuel pickup faces the rearend rather than the side. Allowing tighter fitting of the exhaust against the tank. It also gives you the option of getting a tank with a drain plug. Dennis can chime in and give you details and/or corrections. I think they are $100-$135 with install kit. Seth
99% of us just run the dual exhaust next to the original tank ... It's tight but my guy ran 2 1/4 pipe down both side of the tank and there's plenty of clearance ..
here is a link to the conversion. http://www.maverick.to/gtu_faq.php I'm running 2 1/2 and as you can see, I can go much larger.
