I bought a new Raybestos master cylinder from Rock Auto for my 200 72 Maverick. It came with 2 different lengths of push rods. Both have clips and once they are installed, forget it if you want to remove them later. Does anyone have the correct length for my application so I can start the install?
compare them to the ones that's in your car now, once you have it removed. with them side by side, you'll get an idea of which one to use
One is for Mustangs (they used the same master) It should be the shorter of the 2. Didn't it say anything in the instructions?
Well, I did find a tag on one of the rods. It was for the Mustang and Cougar only. So, I assume the other was for the Mav. As stated above, trying to get the push rod out is a real pain due to the clips they use. I still have to remove the M/C and will see if I can compare the old with the other rod.
If you have a vise. Insert the rod in the vise with the master cylinder body above, use 2 screwdrivers between the vise and master cylinder and pry upwards to pop the rod loose. Might help to spray some lubricant on the rod and clip.
First off, it will come apart. Just takes some force. If you're in doubt on the rods, remove the clips from the ends for test fitting, then once you determine the correct rod, put the clip back on for your final install. I only got one rod with mine and it was wrong (too long) so I re-used the original one. Russ
