Fellas I need to know the best option in a drag shock for the front suspension that is still very streetable. My front suspension is stock with 6 cylinder springs. Thanks
I got the same ones as Cliff. even at the 90/10 setting they are very mild mannered with the sway bar hooked up. Haven't tried with the bar unhooked yet or at the track. honestly, I'm a little concerned that they are so tame. I expected it to jump up like wild every time I took off and that's just not the case.
I used to have a set of competition engineering 90/10's on the '74 turbo 302 Maverick. Was fun in a straight line, but if I was in a turn and the road wasn't exactly smooth, it was a real handful. Drag shocks simply do not dampen suspension movement enough to work well on the street. It was one of those trade-offs....did I want good road control or good straight line manners. I took the former (as it was, afterall, a street car not a race car).
Qa1, 12-way adjustable shocks. Set them loose for racing and then tighten them up for street or road racing, just turn the dial and that's it !! I have them all the way around and the car rides like a Cadillac on the street and hooks up great at the track!! The best of both worlds!!
i was going to ask the same question. steve what are you running for traction bars on the rear of your car? i was thinking of trying the comp eng. slide-a-links that were mentioned in the comet in this months car craft. i need to work on my 60's.
I'll get those part #'s for you guys tonight! The fronts have to be modified to make work and the rears need some work to get in there also. Qa1 does offer a "bolt-in" shock for the front of our cars now but it is significantly more expensive then the ones that I bought and modified. I'll try to get some pics also! I'm running cal-tracs but i've heard great things about the slide a links, they are basically the same thing but i've heard that the slide a links are a little more street friendly.
Don, I just have slapper bars at the moment, Lakewoods I believe, but I did get my Cal Tracs and I am going to try to get them on the car this week, for this weekend. I have been playing with my air pressures in my slicks, they seem to like 13.5 psi. (Mickey Thompsons, 9:00 X 28.5)I bought the global west lower control arms, the ones with the spherical bearing in them. Going to also do the uppers and the drag braces. Trying this stuff slow to see the difference they all make. The car brings the front wheels up now about a foot and a half and carries it for a couple of car lenghts.
talked to the guy that builds and fabricates racecars here. he didn't say much good about the slide-a-links. said he needed to use about all the tools he had in his shop to get them on and they made little difference. as for the cal tracs he said you could almost put them on with a butterknife and they work good. i told him if i had any problems putting them on i'd be over to borrow his butterknife. steve what was the part # for the cal tracs. thanks, don
Don, just tell them they are for a Maverick. You will need two dimensions, the axle tube dimension right next to the spring perch (for the new u bolts)and the width of the spring perch, (for the cal trac mount)it should be 2 1/2 or 3. It took Cal Trac 3 calls to me to get this info, they didn't ask all the questions at one time.
Qa1 drag shocks The part # for the front shock is 00665522 and i'm including a picture of how I mounted mine. Note the greaseable perch bushing!! The rear shock will depend on how you guys will mount them, if you stay with the stagerred setup, the shocks i'm using will probably not work for you. I moved mine to the rear for a better drag race type setup. It would be best if you took your own measurements for the rear of your car since some people will mount them differently and some ride heights will be different. I hope this helps!
thanks for the info. i'm going to order the caltracs as soon as i get the car out of the trailer again and take the measurements.
