I have a 71 Mav with a 4-lug front end. I pulled the spindle off and have 78 Granada disc that I'm installing. Question #1 When I miked the shaft on my outer tie rod end Its the same size as the hole in the spindle, why have I always heard that you have to get Granada tie rod ends if these are the same size ? When I said I miked it I mean both the top and bottom so I could tell how much taper there is with both. #2 In holding the brake line in place and free swinging the spindle it seems like it should have a longer brake hose then the stock Granada one, does anyone make a longer hose ? #3 When mounting the new spindle, with out changing any settings, will the alignment be OK to get me to a shop for a front end alignment ? #4 Do these spindles raise or lower the front end any ? #5 Can I use the MC that already there (4 drum MC) for the ride to the alignment shop and what will the brake action if I do ? #6 Is there a MC for this set up that I won't have to use a proportioning valve ? Rick I did the same swap on my 71. 1 As for the hoses I move the anchor point backwards to fit the hose and added a short lenght of break line ( steel line ) to fill the gap. 2 Tie rods ends will work. 3 As for port valve I used a adjustable one. 4 You will have to change the master cyl. to a disc/drum master . I had go to power booster. 5 If you get the toe in close you can get to the shop
Mavdog, Do you have any pics of your hose tie-in. If I move the connection point back it would put more strain on the hose. The hose comes out of the Cal in the front and connects to the hard line from the rear. I know I will have to change the MC and I will do that when I pull the engine and paint the engine bay, it will be so much easier at that time. Then I can stand in there and do a nice job of mounting a prop valve and bending lines. I just want to know can I use this MC to go get an alignment. In using the existing tie rod settings am I aligned enough to drive to a shop ? Also do you feel that the disc spindles raised or lowered your front end any ? Thanks again Mavdog
Rick Will jack it up later this week a take pic of hose anchor . Spindles will not raise or lower your car. Master cyl. should work BUT will be very hard to stop the drum mc will not have the proper pressure for disc I went out and checked I move the hose anchor forward
Mavdog Thanks for the info, I'm going to look at it in the morning but I think I will bend a 180 and move the bracket alittle higher and have the hose connection facing forward. That should give enough free hose, I will let you know. Thanks again Rick
I did the same on my 73, the tie rods fit. Did you try 74 Maverick disc hoses? I left the connections in the stock locations, and have had no issues. I've posted pictures in the past, I don't have any on this computer.
Mavdog , Dave here is what I did. I cut the tubing that was coming in at the front and rebent it so it would be at the rear of the holder. Now the hose has plenty of free swing to it.
