So anybody know what material was used to seal the dip stick cap to the dip stick tube? It appears to be a felt type material on the underside of the little cap. (200cid engine)

    Thanks!

I have an NOS one in my hands right now, and the best way I could describe it, is it looks just like a tiny version of the old rear main seal rope seals.

If yours is missing I don't see why a little disk of leather with a small slit in the center, could not be slid down the dipstick and into the cap to make a new seal. I would think that would do it.

I pulled what was left out, it's oil soaked but does remind me of the rope seal. I may try and clean it to get a better look. The devil is always in the details, the last thing you need is the material to decompose, fall into the pan and get sucked up into the pump. Why take the chance!

So here's the finished product, I ended up using pieces of a new rope seal and some RTV. I slathered up the cap, then cut a quarter inch of the rope seal and slid it over the top, then jammed it into the RTV. Once it sets up I'll pick off the loose bit and hit it with some air. I think it came out pretty good!
