I got my Edelbrock 100hp Performer NOS kit today and will install this weekend. The kit was to be "complete". It says to operate at 900 to 950 psi but has no regulator or gauge. I scuba dive and we simply open the tank the whole way and the regulator reduces the 3200 psi to a level so we can breath. 1) How do I regulate it at 925 psi? Do I just put a gauge on the bottle (which wasnt included in the complete kit) or at the solenoid and adjust the screw/opener on the bottle till it reads 925 psi? You dont have to worry about that with a scuba tank. 2) I never used NOS before but I know racers purge the system before a race? How do you do this? It has nothing like a purge valve I have on my scuba regulator. 3) Strategy question at the drag strip. When do I turn the NOS on and for how long? I guess what I am saying at what rpm or mph do I turn it on. Since it has two switches one inside the car and a micro switch at the throttle that opens when throttle is wide open, do I assume after I pass the finish line I do not have to turn off the switch in the car right away to shut off the NOS because the throttle switch will cut it off when I am done flooring the car and hope to stop in time with my 4 wheel drum brakes. Its funny the instruction manual is great for installation but really has nothing on how to use it.
1. get a gage and a bottle heater. you regulate it by heat. open the valve all the way. 2. there are two ways to purge. first way the right way is to get a purge valve. it installs another nitrous solonoid right before the main nitrous solonoid that vents to atmospher. you push a buton and it lets out the air in the line. the second and wrong way its done is when your doing a burn out, you activate the nitrous for a second or two during the burn out. obviously this can go wrong in more ways than one. 3. the "complete" kit is the minimum amount of parts nessary to have a working system. there are lots of ways to controle nitrous. if your car hooks then you want it to turn on when you floor it when you launch. you dont want it turning on below 3000 rpm (use a rpm window switch). also make sure the fuel system is able to supply adiquate fuel (get a hobbs switch that will turn off the fuel press if it drops below 5 psi). as you can see the complete kit is far from being everything you need to be safe and get the most from nitous. feel free to ask more questions as im sure you will have more. Ive ran lots of nitrous through lots of motors and never had a motor failure related to it.
I also recommend a safety solenoid, This goes in front of the regular solenoid, Where if the regular solenoid hangs due to trash the safety will turn off the nitrous. A nitrous filter is another MUST HAVE in my book as nitrous or should i say the handling of, Makes it some nasty stuff. You wouldn't believe the stuff i have gotten out of my filters, I did say filters as mine goes Thur 3 before going into the motor. Nitrous is a lot of fun and evens the playing field BUT it MUST BE TREATED WITH RESPECT. I to have ran a lot of nitrous as I'm on my 19th nurse tank (40 + pounds a tank).
it means that the car has great traction and can launch at the dragstrip at full throttle with out any tire spin "hooked up" "hooking up"
