Cool video on how to determine if a car is numbers-matching.

This is a video put together by West Coast Classic Cougar. While I really am not focused on numbers-matching, I found it really good to view, and feel a tiny bit smarter about old Fords now. :thumbs2:

    enjoy ...

Well done video! Lots if not all of this applies to our cars! Very common to have older part numbers on a car, like the smog equipment they showed. as long as the part number doesn't correspond to a later date than the car's build.

    Thanks for sharing, Captain!

It does kinda make you feel a little bit smarter about how things were done.

That Cougar is one of the dream cars for my own personal fleet when I am rich (we all can dream, can't we?). I like 69s the best of all the Cougar body styles and it is one of the best-looking convertibles ever made, too.

Awesome color scheme on that car as well.

    Very well done video...

Was waitin' for the carb on the engine to get the buzzer as it's obviously not orig(at least to us 428CJ guys), then he pulls the orig out of the trunk, sneaky...

BTW having owned a original 428CJ Fairlane Cobra for 40 years, I can say all the info presented was 100% correct, seen all those codes on my car over the years... Mine has a steering box that is date coded something like six months ahead of production...

Is the build sheet located in the same place on the Maverick/Comets? I looked under the seats, trunk, dash area? I thought it was likely gone.

Sometimes under the carpet, or under the front seat, in the springs.

I have found them all ovder the car. Behind the front kick panel, up in the dash, behind the rear kick panel, etc. In that video...it looked like he was knowing where to look. I bet in reality it took him hours to find it.

Anyone familiar with a particular model knows where to look first...

With the Fairlanes, Torinos, Cyclones etc they were in same place as that Cougar, if it was a Lorain build... Atlanta cars generally had them in the rear seat springs, while Kansas City usually stuffed them in the front seat springs(with most cut to pieces)... No doubt were in different locations with the Mav/Comet, depending on plant, year etc...

My Comet was built in Kansas City. The build sheet was in the front seat springs (bench seat). I rescued what was left of it early in my ownership of the car. I got about 80% of it, and glued it to a piece of construction paper.

The 302 has the partial VIN(usually eight digits), stamped on the pad just behind the intake, not really hard to view it...
