Long story short, two of the rims i was GOING to use on the maverick, were stolen?! Was going to use a set of turbines off an AMC Spirit... Now i am looking to find new rims, and am a bit confused... browsing through summit, i ran across these... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AEO-50-974535BLK/ Aero Race Wheels 15" rim 7in wide 3.5" backspacing BUT here's my concerns These are listed as Not DOT approved for street use? Why on earth would that be? It also mentions knife edged bead humps? what's that all about? and maximum-sized bead seats? Are these for drag tires, and will not work for a standard tire? I don't plan on driving her THAT much, and i don't see what the deal with DOT approval for rims is all about. These are light weight, proper size, but the last thing i need is to have to get some kind of drag racing tire with a wierd mounting that cant' be used for street use. Though i doubt a cop would pull me over for not having DOT approved rims... most wouldn't notice? They seem like a steal if they would work with a standard type of tire (such as a Goodrich Radial T/A wich is what i want) That and i wouldn't even begin to know how to get centercaps for these?
A (very) quick Google search came up with this link http://www.aev-conversions.com/products/wheels/beadlock_info.php
Those wheels are made for round track racing. They bend very easily, They are made to flex and not break during the stress of dirt track racing. During the race season here I bet we change 100's for them for the dirt track racers. As far as the bead lock on those wheels go............... it is very difficult to get the bead to seat on them if it is not a race tire.
What size wheels are you looking for? I have a set of 14 inch Progressive Turbines I might sell. And I will be in Louisville in a couple days.
Looking for 14-15inch roughly, as i am a bit old fashioned for my age, and LOVE a meaty tire with smaller rim. The turbines i had were 15's, and i still have two, they are 130 bucks a pop brand new, though i am heavily considering black chroming my car... i just worry about stability, and the like of a beadlock rim... so my understanding of hos those work, is it has a ring with small bolts, that literally BOLT the tire to the rim to prevent the tire from spinning on the rim etc? It's reallly too bad, as those are the first set of rims i've really liked in black chrome. As i am going to run a stallion paint scheme on my car in black and silver, with black chrome accents, they would look good, but i don't want something that will just be an absolute disaster, and potentially fail causing danger, or destruction to me or the car. Interested in the 14" turbines... depending on their shape and cost.
Try looking at Cragar V5's in Summit's catalog. Sharp looking wheels I had a set on my 89 Ranger and a pair of 15 x10's on my custom aluminum utility trailer with raised white letter tires
