i am more into the looks of the mercury comet tail light... so im just wondering if anyone has ever converted a maverick to have a comet tail lights. knowing the rear panel will be needed to be change too but is the wiring completely different from one another?

I've got wiring diagrams (for '72) that show some differences in the lamp wiring, extra grounds and such for the Comet line...

ths. also, just out of curiousity.... will the comet tail lights be a direct bolt on to a mavey? will there be rear panel changing involved or a little trimming of the existing light holes?

Are the Comet tail light sockets not different from Mavericks? I thought they twist in? But then again, I've only have 1 Comet.

    I've had a few
Yes, you will have to drill out all the spot welds that hold the Maverick panel in and replace it with a tail panel from a Comet. The tail panels are completely different. You will also have to replace the light sockets with ones that twist into the tail lights, and have an extra ground wire coming off them. The reason for the extra ground, is the Maverick's light sockets ground through the metal housing of the tail light. The Comet's tail light housing is some sort of plastic (maybe fiberglass?), so you have to add a ground since the socket cannot ground through the housing.

corect but one thing is the light housing is not a plastic or fiber glass. it is a mattel housing. I know for sure because ive sand blasted mine and repainted them.
but my ground wire goes on one of the bolts. maybe it got changed a couple of times.
