I put my first starter in and it was good for a couple months (mounts on bell housing with 2 bolts). The starter was flush against the bellhousing but looked cock-eyed. Eventually part of a tooth broke off the starter and prevented the flywheel from spinning. So I replaced it under warranty and put it in. I am starting to hear the gear not turning the flywheel 100% of the time. The starter still looks a little cockeyed in there. Shoud I reinstall with a washer or two to get a straight visual look? Is the gear in the starter motor wrong for my application. Any thoughts?
you need to take it off and in spect the mounting surface carefully. it should sit flush all the way around and look strieght when compared to the oil pan flange. there is susposed to be a plate between the motor and trans that both holes for the starter must go through. if that plate is missing or one side of it is missing it will cause your problem. if its missing they sell a shim for ford starters at most auto part stores. use that shim to replicate the plate.
