Hi all you masters of the road! I have been sitting around with this new carb of mine, the one that is one is a real goner... No choke housing and etc etc, barely working, so I´m about to change it, but I´m not certain if I can do it myself, I was thinking about going to the shop, but since I have not got the money I was thinking if someone could guide me through the process.. That is of course if someone feel up to it, everything from the hoses to the idle screw... I´m only asking, but as U usally say man made machine and not he other way around and I really want to learn. Thank you all! Robert.
It should just unbolt from the manifold and the other will go right in the same place. Any hoses that come off one should go on the other in the same place. Might have to pull some hose fittings off the old one and put them in the same place on the new one. If you get stuck, upload some pics so we can see where you are... There is no reason you could not do it yourself.
Going pretty good. Just waiting for a couple of parts I have ordered, and hope to be back on the road before the month is out.
theres 2 bolts that hold it to the intake, a small tube that goes off the exhaust manifold to heat the choke, an electrical plug to the choke, the vac line to the dizzy, the rubber fule line that slipes over the nipple on the tip of the fule filter, and the throttle cable that snaps in place. thats really all i can remember. if theres anything else it'll be minor. take a few refrence pics before you take it off just in case. you probably wont need them tho. good luck
Yea, a very easy take it apart and put it back together how it came apart job. Just basic hand tools will get the job done. Good luck.
Okei... Put the new carb on, it won´t start at all if I don´t put the pedal right through the floor, and when I get it going it runs so hard I have to turn it off... It races real high rpm, this is a "new" Holley carter 1bbl carb on a 74- comet auto, I don´t understand the "concept" of the kickdown rod either... If someone can crack this I´ll be buying christmas presents for you... I´m losing hope all the time, I fix something and something else breaks down, or I manage to break something myself... Robert.
Don´t laugh now, but it is supposed to be great suction in the carb, when it dies on me it´s all this smoke coming up, and when I press the pedal to the max and start it, it goes away in a flash...
make sure the carb is tight against the intake and you did remember to put the gasket back in right? also make sure the idle isnt turned all the way up either
Yes sir! New gasket, and tighten a few times, even some gasket "sealant", the "idle" you are refering to, is it the fast idle or the idle speed screw???
When you say gasket sealant? Where did you put the sealant? There are passages on the bottom of the carb (carter rbs?), if the sealant went into the passages that could be causing your problem. Also check your fast idle adjustment and choke adjustment, might be causeing the problem.
I took good care in not putting it where it should not be, and yes it´s a carter rbs, is the chokeplate supposed to be completely open from the beginning or completely closed, I can´t really get a hang of how all this things work togeteher... Thank you...
The throttle is supposed to be closed to within .040" and the choke will be open until you open the throttle when cold. To start the car, you step on the throttle (to the floor), let it up and press it down half way. Then crank it over. The adjustment for the carb is turn the idle mixture screw in just until it bottoms. Then back it out 1 1/2 turns. (you will probably have to adjust it more later but that should put you in the ball park.) The idle stop screw should be backed out to allow the throttle to completely close. Then screw it in one full turn. Once you get the engine warmed to operating temperature you can make the final adjustments. make sure that all vacuum ports are either plugged or have hoses on them. There should be one vacuum port that has no vacuum signal at an idle and full manifold vacuum above idle. That is the port for the vacuum advance.
