I bought a carpet from Autokrafters about a year ago and never measured it up at the time since I was in the process of restoring my 1973 Grabber. When it was finally time to put it in I found out the hard way that you should always check your orders. Anyway, can't refund or exchange because it took so long for me to get back to them so I ordered a new one. This one, which they say is correct is a one piece and doesn't fit very well. My stock carpet was two pieces like a Mustang or Cougars. I was wondering if any of you guys have encountered this and if this is how the aftermarkets are made or if I really did get the wrong carpet...again. I appreciate the help
Unfortunately .. nobody makes a two piece Maverick Carpet ... I have no idea why since two piece carpets were original to our cars and they already make them for Mustangs. Maybe we can start a letter writing campaign to ACC and/or AutoKrafters (they sell ACC carpet) and have them start producing the correct carpet.
wrong part what i did with a part i opened months later and found it to be wrong was...i reordered without telling them of the prob. when i got the right one, i put the wrong one in the box and sent it back as a "wrong part". they had no questions and sent my refund. i do the same thing with stuff that breaks in a short time from when i buy it. if you try to return it and tell them it broke they have a dozen hoops you have to jump through..frank...
I was afraid it was some generic, covers all 73 ford carpet, but I was holding out for good news. Well, I have to say I'm pretty dissappointed in it despite what I've read about it in other threads. Maybe I just need some instalation tips to get it to fit better. I would send that one back, but it says that carpets will not be refunded, only exchanged, but I've got a 70 cougar that doesn't have bad carpet, but I could just send it back and say they were supposed to send me one for the cougar. I actually thought of that, heck, its not like I didn't pay for it any way. Thanks for your help guys.
This is exactly what I do! Off the tread, I once bought a pair of work shoes that I would traid in about every six months for like three years, lol.
There are many people who have no problem fitting the one peice ACC carpet in their cars. I was not one of them ... I bought mine from AK and was/am not happy with the fit ... it almost appears that somebody had trimmed it wrong and sent it back (Frank!) and they resent it to me.
The factory carpets overlapped each other and were bound on the side with the overlap ... you can't just cut a one peice in half ...
Mine was too big, but then again, I have a 69.5, which has a narrower tunnel. I just trimmed it and padded it to fit, and all is well.
Better too big than too small .. that is the problem with the one in my Grabber ... I'll replace sooner or later .. hopefully with a 2 peice if we can convince them to make it ...
I was only asking cause some things made "aftermarket" require modification wether the manufacture says so or not. Maybe I should ask if the carpet can be bound and overlaped, if cut in half. Unless it's too small.
The carpets that come in two pieces have the edges hemmed. I was worried the carpet edges may curl and eventually fray if I cut them myself without hemming.
I still think that if a carpet is too long (front to back), you have something to work with. How much would it cost to have a upolser (spelling) sew a strip on the ends, carry in? I have seen carpets that have a strip of vinyl on the ends, goes on kinda like door edge guard, 2"s of vinyl folded in half and sewn on.
Just about any carpet store can bind the edges ... or whatever the process is called .. They do it all the time with remnants .. I still have the factory carpet in my 74 ... I'll have to see how much the overlap is ... However, since the one piece carpet is molded to the floor pan I don't think cutting will work anyway.
To be honest its not the length that is the problem. Its the overall fit of the carpet. The carpet comes pre molded, but since its not molded specifically for a maverick the transmission hump has quite a bit extra and when you push that down and attempt to mold it the sides push up and the molding for that is off. When you try to get that into place it throws the rubber foot rest under the peddles to the side and out of alighnment. So the only solution I can come up with is to alighn it from the driverside and try to push out the molding across the entire car, over the hump, and to the passenger side sill plate, then cut off the excess. I think thats a lot of work for a "Premolded" "supposed to be made for my car" carpet. I thought it may be easier in two pieces.
