Hello all, this might be a very dumb question, but here it goes. I have a 289 on my 77 maverick, it's got 302 heads with a holley 600 and it's automatic. Now, when I hit the gas pedal when im completly stopped, the car kinda laggs before getting all the power. I want to know, what i need to do to be able to hit the gas pedal and get imediate response from the car. Any ideas, please help me out, i hate that lagg. thanks Julio
Yes I have, i have New Plugs and wires. I don't know what it is, if I hit the gas pedal hard to race or whatever, it kinda laggs for some reason. the all of a sudden it kicks in .
All of the linkage in the accelerator pump system should be touching it's nieghbor in the system. Touching, BUT NOT APPLYING PRESSURE. If the linkage parts are either too tight or too loose, you will get the symptoms you describe. That is where I would check first. Next would be to make sure the pump is not leaking or shooting it's load back into the bowl rather than out of the squirter. If your linkage is right and the diaphram is good, then you should be able to move the throttle by hand, engine off, and see fuel come from the squirter. No matter how slight you move the throttle, you should see fuel if you move the throttle. Then it is right. If you still have the problem, then check the rear linkages and make sure a PO hasn't put a screw in the linkage to make the rear barrels 'mechanical'. That does not work and will give the symptoms you describe. Check your float level. After these quick checks, then check the timing if all is still not well.
