After driving and I turn off the car it takes about 30 - 45 minutes before I can start it again. When I try to start it, it seems as if the batery is low and will hardly even crank, sometimes it just clicks. About 30 - 45 minutes later it will start right up. Does anyone know what is happening? Bad battery/alt/grounds/cables. Take 'er to Autozone and have them test the electrical system. If that checks out, I'd be thinkin starter...
Solenoid could be going south also. But I'd check the cables as mentioned. Does it start hard even when it has been sitting over night? If so the timing could be a bit to much advanced and it starts when cold, but not hot
Probably a bad starter. They get heat from the engine, then wont crank.Pretty good indicator of a starter going south.Or a weak battery.Check all components as stated, cables/grounds/battery/charging system etc... I would lean towards the starter/battery.Good luck.
Sounds like a classic worn starter to me. But I would always do the simple first. condition of battery cables, strength of battery. Basic troubleshooting. Dan
Thanks everyone. I changed all the cables, the starter relay and the Alt. checks out fine. I changed the starter about a month ago to try and solve the problem but it is still happening. I guess I will change the battery and see what happens. Any other thoughts?
Good advice from all. I have seen a lot of starters, mainly from AutoZone and Advance, last only a month or two.. It seems you get what you pay for. The last starter I bought was back in 6/89. I paid $29.95 for it on sale (regular $39.95) and the going price for a starter back then was $19.95
hot starting problems Years ago I had a 68 Mustang with the exact same issue . I changed most everything to no avail . Finally put a new Coil on the car and that fixed the problem. The old one worked fine when the engine was cold , but once the coil got hot it would not fire until it cooled back down. Try it - maybe a cheap fix.
Agree about the starter. Put a new starter from Autozone on my friends F150 and it went bad in about a months time. Let us know what it turned out to be.
Check the ground cable where it is bolted to fender I had a similar problem as you described, and it seems that where the ground cable was bolted to the fender (under the voltage regulator) the bolt wouldn't snug up, so I put a bolt and washer and nut and tightened it down and it seems to have solved the problem. I had replaced everything else and was pulling my hair out over it. Hope that helps. Autozone had mentioned a ground problem and after checking all of the wiring which is new, that is the only questionable ground.
the title of this thread cracks me up everytime i see it... i want to read it as..."car won't run after starting." ......:sorry:
