Hello, I have a 77 comet with a bit of slip between 2nd and 3rd. I searched previous posts about adjusting the intermediate band. I had found my adjustment was set at 1 1/2 turns. It seems other folks have set this band tighter to reduce the shifting issue. Will this cause damage if I experiment with tightning the band in 1/4 turn increments? Is it possible to set this adjustment too tight? Thanks in advance.

Absolutely you can over tighten the intermediat band. When it is too tight you will get premature wear of the band, heat checking and / or gauling from the metal band riding on the drum. What has been done to your transmission that is causing the flare? There are a few different shift kits that will fix this problem unless it is from a modification of the valve body.
