I started my tranny rebuild this weekend and I admit I'm a tranny novice, but it didn't take long to find out what was wrong with it. During disassembly I measured the existing end play with a dial indicator and came up with .109 inches. According to specs the range is .008-.042 inches. It appears that whoever rebuilt it last forgot to install thrust washer #6 which should be between the input shell and the reverse carrier as shown in the pic below. As a result of all this slop, thrust washer #9 was beat to death and worn real bad too. The back of the carrier was boogered up but I was able to put it on the lathe and cleaned it by removing less than .003 inches. The rest of the hard parts look good. I guess my question is if I get a complete set of washers and an additional selective set would that be enough to bring it back to spec? What are these "shims" I see available? The other problem was both clutch packs only have four friction disks in them but that should be an easy fix. It's real shame because it's apparent that this tranny was just recently refreshened, unfortunately by an idiot. The disks, plates and bands still look new. Glad I decided to tear it down before it gernaded.....
