The way I understand it is the 6 cyl. tranny has fewer clutches than the V-8 version ...so it will work but would not hold up as well in a performance application. The 250 bellhousing works with the 302 (157 tooth flexplate) but the 170/200 bellhousing is too small.
mav, while we are here, will a 3.00 rear end work with the cam you have for my motor? i found the 3.00 yesterday. i am so glad...frank...
~Yes the cam will work fine with a 3.00 gear. ~ Although I`m not positive on this I would think that the extra clutches could be added to a 6 cyl. trans to upgrade it to "v-8 status" ~ No I`m not going to tenn. this weekend , If the rain holds off I`ll have the engine ready for you to pic up tomorrow after lunch. I will call you when It is ready to pic up.
C4 stuff Hey Jerry, just thought I would throw in a few tips on the subject. Ford made a zillion mods to the c4 over the years, some major and most little improvements as different engines and body styles were manufactured. Basically the trans are pretty much the same design, the rebuild kits come with seals, gaskets and extra clutches to accomidate the different internal changes. Majority of the c4's either 6 or 8cyl have a four disc clutch pack, however a lot have five discs. More is better , but to change from four to five you either have to find a trans with the correct clutch drum to accomidate the extra disc and steel plate or have the four disc drum machined. Not all the drums can be machined because of the snap ring groove location. Must have the mfg. build code tag on the servo bolt to find out which is which or find a scrap yard that will let you tear into a few cases to see whats in there. Some trans shops will have bins of extra parts and may have a five disc drum for a price??? Personnaly I think that a good four disc trans will work great in a street application and maybe some occasional strip runs with mild engine's. Correct internal clearances is the key as is top grade "F" fluid and a shift kit and external cooler, HO engines and full race cars will need the extra goodies to survive(some use 6 and 7 disc drums roller bearings and a bunch of other high dollar mods) A good rebuild and quality parts will work for most apps, have got code no's for five disc trans somewhere in this mess I call a puter room but it will take some digging to find them. Did not mean to drag this out but after 40 yrs of getting up at 5:am each day, including some weekends, to get those trains down the track in some sort of running order, I still can't sleep in even in retirement, so get on this here screen to catch up on things etc. Mav's and Fords are like the old steam engines, just a wonder to look at and work on with awesome results The diesels were interesting too but not the work of art like the fire breathing monsters of old. Nuff said, need more coffee.
thanks old guy, i have one of each of the c4s. i will tear both down and let all know what i find. got to get ready to go to m.a.v.'s and get my 302 and stuff ...frank...
Sure is nice to hae Old Guy back. BTW, there are a ton of old C4s around, so I would think you could find a complete one easier than searching for individual parts. JMO....
just picked up my c-4 from a guy yesterday who rebuilt it for me. he said it would stand up to a lot more horsepower than i'm putting to it. he also said he added some more plates to it to make it work better. quite a few racers told me this guy is good and does all their work. he came down and opened his shop on a sunday for me to pick it up. the charge was $325. i thought that was an extremely good price. i built the one in my car now and figured i didn't have the time to do another right now. he also told me that if you take the kickdown lever and wire it into the open position all the time it tricks the transmission into thinking the engine is wide open all the time and will help the car at the track. has anyone else heard this or tried it? thanks
