I was looking at Bobbys new tires (that look great) and he mentioned the...bumpstops. i trimmed mine back but was wondering......has anyone ever seen where they have ever hit? of all the Mav/Comets i've had, never seen where they have touched. any reason these couldn't be removed completely without any problems later? I would think, if you hit a hole/bump big enough for them to touch...you have torn...oilpan, transmission pan, center chunk, flattened exhaust pipes, drive the driveshaft yoke up in the transmission and torn at least one tire/rim off... ...and the...bumpstops...would not have stopped it from happening... ......
I'm thinking of the same thing, the tire should bottom out in the wheel well before the bumpstop will take efect... I'm at least going to trim it like you did....
I'm thinking the same thing about the tires with the wider than stock tire, it should hit first ......
I have had the pinion snubber hit but never the outer 2 bumpstops. I just assumed it was closer to the housing relative to travel. It is also possible that the shocks bottom before they hit. I probably would trim them back for wider tires as well.
I trimmed mine off, just in case, but they never did hit, with 245X60X15 tires. The traction bars, however, did hit, so they got trimmed also.
I suspect they were not meant to limit suspension travel during normal driving, but more as a safety measure if over-loaded. Like if Bubba decided to take a hog to market in the trunk.
Don,t forget when turning corners body roll plays a part on those snubbers. This is a safety preventer that prevents any damage from happening. The leaf springs are arched to a certain degree that helps to prevent any bottoming out . I' ll keep mine. Taking a chance on my pride an joy is not a option. Safety should be our top guide. What ever you guy's an ladies do always put safety first . I respect you all so have fun!!!!!!!!!!! (I'll check with the my shop manuels to get more info)
let me ask this question...has anyone seen, have a pic. of one that has been hit. i know i have never seen one...if none have been hit, you still have 2.5" to go before it hits the frame rail... ...and...just what would the safty issue be here? ......
I think if you feel you need a bump stop, but still want the room for tires.. Just mount a bump stop centered under the frame rail... best of both worlds out of your way but still there for the purest (just a thought)
