you have to cut out wider openings behind the light in the steel panel to make room for the bulb sockets on the insides. you may be able to just bolt them on if you willing to make the inside red lenses non-functional
Heya Hodges- I will have a set of step by step pics organized soon if you want to take a look at them. I installed the bobcat lights in my grabber a short time ago- its no big deal. Basically you'll just need to drill 1 extra hole per light in the steel panel to accomodate the extra stud on the bobcat lights. Anyway- let me know if you want the pics and I'll shoot them over to you after I clean them up in photoshop.
I think step one is to obtain a set of Bobcat lights. I have been stuck at step one for about 4 years...
I cut the back-up light part off a pair of Maverick tail lights, spliced in some bulbs, and lit up the reflector part. I had to cut out more of the tail panel for the extra fixture to fit. You guys can check here for bobcat lights. I have purchased several sets from him in the past, though he is currently out. He gets new stuff in monthly. click the link, then: Ford->mercury->comet, bobcat, etc. Then scroll down to the bottom. http://www.taillightking.com/index.html I also know of another guy selling a passenger side bobcat NOS light... but he wants 100+ bucks for it... I'm converting my bobcat lights in a similar fashion to Hawk above, but I will solder a shaped green board with around 70 red LEDs on each side to them. That way they will be instant on/off, like a new Caddy or other high end car. There is really no reason to do this, aside from being a huge geek such as myself and enjoying fiddling with circuitry, etc, LOL.
I met that taillightking at a local swap meet a couple weeks back, he is located just north of houston. Said he just sold his last set, but will keep an eye out for me.
If you are not concerned with making the inner lenses functional, and you don't want to cut your car up, you can simply grind the stud off that's on the metal plate behind the inner lenses. This is how I installed them on our '72 daily driver. Lights are bolted to the original Maverick taillight openings with no cutting or drilling of the tail panel what so ever. I can take them off and reinstall the original Maverick lights anytime. I found my tail lights on a '75 Bobcat in the junkyard a few months ago. Got them for 15 bucks.
I might do them like Jamie, and put in some LEDs on a wire running across...that way, all on the same circuit, no new holes need to be drilled. Just thinking out loud here, so like, never mind me... By the way, Jamie, that looks really good. And those are FABBED lights, or real bobcats?
There is a bobcat at Birmingham Pull a part I was going to go try to get the taillights but I decided to put the power disk setup I have on my car. I am wanting to get a header, twin exhaust, cam, and 2v carb for my car so I decided to not buy the taillights and try to save for other parts
