So hopefully this fall the mav will have a running engine. In the meantime im planing out my budget build. Heres my plan so far: OE roller block 302ci, gt40 heads mild rebuild, 1.6 roller rockers, double roller timing chain w 4degrees of adjustability, performer289 intake, 1 inch open/4hole spacer, 9.0:1 comp hyper pistons, 600cfm holley#6919, 1 5/8 headers w 2.25 exhuast, e303 or tfs stage1 roller cam, duraspark dizzy w sf msd box. i already have the intake, carb, dizzy i know theyre not the best but this is a budget build so i want to reuse them. and heres are some of my questions:
#1 camshaft: which one would work better for my application? i want this car to be a nice street machine with a c4 auto 3.55grs,and i live 15mns from california speedway so i do plan on testing the car. i plugged in the cams into my dyno sim and these are the results i got, using these head flow numbers: 1.84 iv 110@.2lift 159, 183, 185, 190 1.54 ev 28@.1lift 125, 129, 129, 132 results: e303 cam 144hp/378tq @2,000 338/394 @4,500 346/331 @5,500 and the tfs#51402000stage 1 cam: 144/379 @2,000 339/396 @4,500 366/349 @ 5,500 the tfs cam made more power but the power line looks like a mountain with the peek at 5,500, and the 303 cam has a nice gradual power curve which looks alot nicer.
I know those numbers are way off due to my not so stellar intake/carb so #2 induction: is there anything i can do to make this smog carb work better? and is it possible to improve the performer289 intake? besides a clean up and a gasket match port job. Thanks! any help/ideas are apprecaited.
I forgot to post the cam specs. E303: 220Duration .498lift 110 lca 110 ic and tfs stage1: 221/225 .499/.510 112 lca 108 ic
That intake is going to be your biggest limiting factor in my opinion. Are those the iron or aluminum heads? The short block build you describe is pretty much what you can buy new from Ford Motorsport. Have you compared pricing? They have a Ford Motorsport dealer at the Auto Center on Jurupa in Ontario. Get the information and google those engine part numbers, there are deals out there and shipping isn't bad. Ask Santa for an Airgap intake manifold, or use your Birthday money.
you could probly get a whole explorer motor from a slavage yard for what you would spend on geting the reman short block and finding gt40 heads. you can sell the efi intake to mustang guys for about what the cost of a performer rpm costs.
Oh cool thanks, the explorer efi intakes are worth something? i c them all the time and i can get them for 40bucks.
The explorer heads are Gt40 "P"',the spark plug angle is different therefore you will need special headers for the plug wires to clear the header tubes. I know hi po 289 exh. manifolds work, not sure if regular stock manilfolds will work. But then again if you run better heads with stock manifolds it kinda defeats the purpose of using the heads IMO. There is a couple of companies that make these headers,I know Sanderson makes some shorties I was checking them out for my 64 falcon,im gonna run the same heads. These heads will benefit more from the TFS stage 1 cam,it is better than the "E" cam. sorry for the essay just wanted to give you a heads up. Good Luck
Jay do you know what year explorer i should be looking for? Or better yet do you have the Intake part number? Thanks, I visit like every inland empire junkyard once a week lol
Thanks! I believe the 96,97? models came with the nonP Heads, which will work with off the self 6901 headers, someone correct me if im wrong. Im slowly getting back into fords after a year long hiatus lol
