I have a 72 grabber with a 302 A/T and the battery ground cable is also grounded through the voltage regulator. Is this necessary? I need a new cable and would have to cut a section of the cable and ground it to the regulator. This doesn't seem right.
Sounds like someone added a separate ground for the voltage regulator. The regulator should ground through the screws when mounted to the inner fender, but a separate ground never hurts. Remove it and see if everything works as it should.
I lost spark and think it may be because the ground cable is shot and gets very hot when cranking the engine. So if I replace the cable without the ground and it still doesn't work I won't know for sure if that is the cause. I haven't troubleshooted the cause of no spark but if it's not the cable then I suspect it may be the pertronix igniter.
Many Fords had a factory cable had a tab in the middle that attached at the regulator to help make sure of a decent ground. Just get the same cable like pictured below when you replace it. You can never have too many grounds .....
