I don't want to sound dumb, but I don't know. I have a 74 parts car with the 5 lug setup. Do I have to remove the whole axle or just the inner axle to put it into my 71 Comet? Thanks in advance. I hope this isnt a dumb question.

Depends on what your 71 has now. Look at both to see if both have a removeable center chunk (comes out from the front) Or does either have a rear cover?

what are you wanting to do?
if they are both 5 lug 8" rear ends, you can just swap the axles.

if your doing the 4-lug to 5 lug swap your going to need to pull the whole axle

the axle bearings on a 4 lug rear are smaller then those on a 5 lug rear so the axle shafts them self wont just swap over, you need the whole housing. or atleast the housing and axle shafts from the 5 lug car. you can use whatever 8'' center chunk and gears you want

its still not as rought as you think

theres the U-bolts holding the housing to the springs, the bolts holding the drive shaft to the center chunk and the brake line and e-brake cable

if all this stuff isnt rusted solid it should come out fairly easily.

removing the center chunks, drum brake backing plates and pulling the axle shafts while getting that dirty oil all over the place seems like just as much of if not more of a PITA

    good luck
