Automatic choke not working???

In the Stallion clone, I've got the I-6 250 engine. Pretty sure the carb is a Carter, model YF or YFA. The problem is it's hard to get started, but once it's warm, runs pretty good. I'm guessing the automatic choke is not working. How difficult is it to check and or adjust for a novice with regards to engine work?

Shouldn't really need the choke this time of year. Could be just the fuel draining back..

 

That may be true, but for some reason that 250 is hard to get started.

The yellow car (with the 200 engine) fires right up, idles a little high at first, after a minute or two I punch it and it calms down to a nice, calm idle. This is how my mechanic said these carbs "should" act.

To get the Stallion to start, I have to pump it a lot, then it still turns over many times before even thinking about firing up. Seems like it's starving for gas, if I had to guess, but then again I'm worried about flooding it as well. Once it's started and warmed up, seems to be ok and run fine (the cold idle could be a bit higher though).

Any thoughts if it's "not" the automatic choke.....?

 

even without the... automatic choke...it shouldn't be hard to start. it just want sit and run without feathering the gas...
as DDB said...fuel draining back...

 

U'd think I'd have some insight after a year of driving my mav 250 with that same problem... Don't think I ever figured out exactly what it was. I replaced the entire fuel system on mine and still had the same problem. Keep us posted on this one

 

If you're running a points ignition, you're barking up the wrong tree with the choke or carb. It's much more likely the ignition is the problem here. Run a hot electronic drop in unit, and 99% of your starting problems will permanently disappear.
