Got a new Jeg's universal aluminum radiator installed with some homemade aluminum brackets. Here are some pics.
Better put a thermostatic fan switch on that thing. That is exactly how I did mine (but I moved it forward an inch or so, and put the fan pulling on the inside). I could barely get it above 165* except in the summer... I have since put POR-15 on that top mount. By the way, the July 07 issue of Car Craft has a report on this same radiator...
Looks Great. The only thing I would advise is making mounts for your Tras cooler. I have seen those Plastic ties break. In your case it would hit your fan and leave you stranded.
also i wouldnt recommend the trans cooler after the air stream of the radiator.. figure the radiator will be at 180 degrees, and the hotter air leaving the radiator will go through the trans cooler.. which in turn will keep the tranny fluid hotter.. if i am wrong, sorry. but i know that the engine temps are hotter than tranny temps
Well, I'm going to be more optimistic and say that everything looks just fine the way you have it - as long as it doesn't run hot on you. The stock method for cooling the fluid in all automatic transmissions is to have the lines run to the compartment adjacent to the fins of the radiator (as far as I know), where the temp gets 190ish anyway. Some bracket racers depend on the transmission fluid to be equal to that of the radiator for consistency reasons so they refuse to put an after-market cooler on. (I personally wouldn't run without one though). Yes, having the tranny fulid cooler in front of the radiator is better (IMO), but in your case, that would require getting a "puller" fan. If you're willing to do that, you'd probably would have a cooler running tranny. (Enter the "heat kills transmission" quote here). Looks real clean. Good job.
You should really think of removing cooler and installing it on the other side so you don't blow hot air through it in the process of trying to cool it. The cooler being on the inside has hot air flowing through it as opposed to having it on the outside so that it gets cool air first
when i got my ...trans cooler...they gave me 3 options to mount it. 1-front of condenser 2-between condenser and rad. 3-on rad. inside i chose #2, my electric fan is on the inside. they gave a percent of drop in cooling for each position. i will see if i can find the box and post the #s. if M.A.V. checks in,he put the same cooler on his wifes' car. maybe he can post the #s. ... ...
How much difference in temp. do the aluminum rad. make? And if I could ask which I will what is the cost?
Thanks for all your comments, the rad is a 22"x19" unit from Jeg's. It was installed without cutting any part of the car or chassis. It costs $180 plus handling from Jeg's, but we got free shipping.
Right now it is only running 10-15 degrees cooler but the bottom hose is bent so sharp that we think it is restricting the flow of water, so we are going to install a new hose and a new thermostat beause we don't think it is working right. Once these items are installed, I will post the results on here.
Same one I used. I had the same problem with the lower radiator hose, because the bottom hose mount comes out an odd angle and kinked the hose. then I bought one of these from ebay It is NOT as close to the fan-belt pulley as it looks in this pic. That is an optical illusion.
