i found a 302 and aod out of 1983-85 lincoln VII it has a aod that im interseted in but i heard the early aods arent worth having is this true, the engine has v-belts and throttle body plus factory tube headers ,i can get the engine and tranny for 350.00 or 100.00 for the aod i really dont need another 302 sitting around but thats a good price can anyone give me some knowlege of the aods thanks
Elaborate what you mean by.. "worth having". Worth having for a Maverick or Comet?.. or worth having to make a quick buck for resale?
I have heard similar stories about the early AOD, they are week compared to later units and need updates to be as good. I guess the big questions are, what have you done to the current engine power/modification wise and what are your driving habits/use of the car like? If it has a stock 302 and you cruise it for the most part I would go for it. If you are making decent power and like to use it I would probably pass and find a later transmission.
sorry i should have been more clear i meant is it worth using for a maverick, i have have a stock 289 with intake , carb ,andheaders with 3.50 rear gears . so what upgrades would it need if i ever tore into the aod and rebuilt it?
The '88-up have the improvements that include a rear lube mod and I believe larger servos... Best versions were in the 3.8 Supercoups... I beat on one from a '89 S-Coupe in my T-Bird at strip for nine years and it still works... It does have a Trans-Go Shift Kit and hardened input shaft, I broke the orig first time at strip... Input shaft was only issue I had.. Any transmission 20-30+ years old is going to be a crapshoot... The 5.0 AOD flexplate will be out of balance on a 289, you'll need one for 351...
Well worth using in a Maverick especially with 3.50 gears. For 100 I would get it and run it. You will have to do some work to get it to fit but there is plenty of info on here.
