thinking about buying me one for 400 completely rebuilt... how fast would it be in a mav???? any faster than my 77 granada engine????
"The 1991 Mustang LX 5.0(302) coupe was Ford code P41E and was referred to as a "sedan". This sedan is often called a coupe, notchback, or just plain notch and was available with either an automatic transmission (AOD) or the T-5 5 speed manual transmission. A few of these 5.0 sedans were special ordered by law enforcement agencies or police departments and are referred to as "SSP". There were 2 special buck tags located near the cars radiator support that signified that the car was a SSP. These cars used the standard 225 hp 5.0 (302) engines as found in the LX 5.0 or GT cars but they had several modification including handling packages, reinforced flooring, cooling, braking, and electrical components that lent themselves to heavy duty highway cruising and police pursuit work. There were only 385 of these special ordered sedans built, so in respect, they are quite scarce." so does anyone have 225 hp??? lol can i get an opinion vs my 150 hp engine??
Faster... That is a roller setup, with quite a bit more power. I would guess (probably incorrectly) that it has the e7 heads, which are right below the GT40s and P heads. If low miles, and freshly rebuilt, 400 is a good price, but you can yank these out of junkyards all day long for $300 if it has a bunch of miles on it. "How fast?" I guarantee you can get it to at least 60 or 65 mph...
It will bolt right up but you will have to swap out the flexplate to match the 50 oz imbalance. About $40 off ebay.
I have a 5.0 which I made into an "HO" by putting in a roller cam, roller lifters, roller rockers, and gt40 heads, and even if your heads and cam aren't as big as mine (mine is bigger than yours... sorry...) you will notice a definite seat of pants increase in response first time you hit the throttle. I say "GO FOR IT!!!" EDIT--it is now a poll, so I said "GO FOR IT" twice
Bear in mind the 225Hp rating was with computer and EFI. You should verify that all of your pulleys and brackets will work with this late model engine. Pretty sure that the water pump is reverse rotation on a stock 1991 5.0. Serpentine may be the way to go. Oops, you are going to need an electric fuel pump or change timing covers. Don't forget that cam eccentric for the pump. Oil pan and oil pump pickup might have to be changed too. There has got to be other things to think about too.
Cant you just put your 302 stuff on the 5.0 block? That is what I did. Of course, mine was an 88 5.0 and not "really" an HO. I used my old oil pan, timing cover, and had to move the dipstick and plug the old hole. My valve covers worked, after I massaged the baffles a little. Only thing I had to buy extra was the flexplate.
i say nothing beats a ho like a pimp my 89 stang i had 200000 miles on it weighed 3400lb stock with headers 3.73 gears and barely ported e7 heads it ran 13.30s at 102 all day long lots of fun now homermav has the heads so he will lay the smack down so stock engine in your car will run real good brad
Use the front cover water pump/oil pan and oil pump pickup from your older 302 on the ho engine(they will bolt on)As well as the other things mentioned here and you should be good to go.
Thanks mavman. I thought those all swapped over, but not having done a "real" HO, I didn't want to spread false hopes to Justin.
