Go to your nearest bus station, I bought a grabber hood that was about 1000 miles away. Dude shipped it via greyhound bus. I picked it up at bus station in my town. Cost was $50.00 Dan
I shipped a grabber hood from kc to almost pittsburgh via greyhound, cost 46.50. The base rate means if they need room for luggage, it comes off. If you pay another 20 for priority, it goes on first, and the luggage waits.
. How well did you have to package the hood, and what condition did it arrive in? I' think those guys would just throw it on the ground every time they moved it and it would be destroyed by the time it got to where u sent it.
First off, the hood was packaged very well by the sender. It arrived in great shape. That is first story. Later on I bought several items,(bumper, valance, bumper brackets, spoiler ends, spoiler stone guard) from nearly the same part of the country. This dude sends it via bus too. All arrived in great shape. All boxes were good, not crushed or stepped on in any shape or form. Couple of weeks after that, I got a hood moulding shipped to me via U.S. Postal service. The dude did not attach it to anything solid and simply stuck it inside a box. You can imagine my humor, or lack of when I see a box at my door folded over in half. Yes, it was bent in half, I did salvage it with an hour of work. Dan ps Shipping via bus is my preference now on larger items. I will probably get something that is not pristine at some point in time, but every carrier makes mistakes.
The hard part about shipping a hood is finding a box it will fit in! I finally found something behind a furniture stoor from a bedroom set, that I cut down to 6 inches larger than the hood in all directions. I stuffed lots of foam sheet packing inside to protect the hood. I made sure and told them not to stack anything heavy on it. Yeah, if they had laid it on the ground and walked on it, it probably would have been a bad thing, but they took good care of it and it arrived undamaged. They do have a weight limit, though I don't recall what it is. The hood and box were slightly under 50 pounds. The post office scares me too!
I just got another Grabber hood through this same process. I am very happy with the service. The only trouble is you have to pick it up from the station, but that is really no trouble at all if you think about it. Cost me $37 from Southern California to up here in NorCal. Arrived undamaged even though it wasn't packaged very well. I definatly recommend Greyhound for all huge packages like hoods! -Corbin
I guess I will chime in here also. As it has already been said, and it is worth repeating . . . Greyhound is the only way to go for large parcels. I have had hoods, fenders, and seats sent via Greyhound. One word of caution on the hood, there is a size limit so make sure it gets packed properly. With hood I had shipped, the shipper took time to pack it up only to have to take it back home and repack it because it exceeded the size limit. The shipper had to find another box, but then it worked out just fine. Good luck.
Here's a full proof method of getting hood trim shipped undamaged. Go to your local Home Depot and buy a piece of 4" pvc. Comet trim may need 6". Anyhow, cut to length and tape the ends up good. Less than $10
You can also put the hood trim in a long box that is about 10" x 10" square. Have the molding taped to a 2" x 4" piece of wood.
I shipped a fiberglass Grabber hood from Michigan to Texas last year for under $50. Arrived in great shape within a few days. As was said eariler, it may be a little bit of a hassle to have to pick the item up at the local Greyhound terminal, but the $$$ savings is probably worth it! Another thing...the guy told me they don't have any kind of tracking like UPS or FedEx has... In spite of that, I would still use Greyhound for large items like that. Mark
