I am wanting to build a hot motor for my car. A 347 with afr 185's would be idea but it is way out of budget right now. This is what I am planning to run I have a 77 302 from a van that I traded dad out of I plan to get it bored new cam bearing installed. I am going to run a set of je flat top pistons, a cam at around .500 lift, gt40 heads, 1.7 crane roller rockers, performer rpm intake, 600 holley and 6901 headers. I also plan to use electronic ignition. I am hoping this would make about 300 hp. I also plan to run a 2500-3000 rpm stall. I also plan to put some 3.55 gears and a powertrax in my rear. I am hoping for a low 8 second car in the 1/8. What does everyone else think of this combo
I will let you know next week. I have pretty similar build up on my car, except roller cam and a bit more lift. I will be doing a dyno and test-and-tune and let you know how it turns out. I was pulling 9.4 1/8th times with my stock motor with just headers and 4 barrel and gt40 heads. so 8 seconds should be pretty easy.
cool. I remember a while ago you messed up the original engine I remember it being some thing to do with the heads and cam. I was wondering what it was
I put the gt40p heads on as I bought them, and the springs were for a roller engine. I was running flat tappet, and the spring pressures were too high. Pushed the lifter into the cam eating both up. When I put the gt40 heads on this time, I made sure to buy the correct springs to go with my roller lifters and cam.
that combo should be between 275 to 325 hp. i would recomend geting a roller motor to start with. that alone will get you 25 more hp than useing a flat tappet cam. the roller motor is lighter that the older motors by 15 lbs. get one with e7 heads or get an explorer 5.0 motor with the gt40 heads and you will be doing pretty good. the cost of the machine shop and parts should be more than it would cost to get the roller motor. then all you need to do is put a beter cam in it, put your intake and carb on it. use the right distrubtor, oil pan and front timeing cover and youll have a motor that should have no problem running low 8s in the 1/8th.
would I hurt anything by running a flat tappet cam with this engine and heads as long as I had the right valve springs
If the springs match the tappets, you should be fine. I didn't change the springs. A hard lesson to learn, the hard way. But I agree with Bryant. Get either a roller motor or any 5.0 that you can convert to a roller. Cheap and easy, and safe.
Damn. I have no idea. I have a buddy who works at a racing engine parts house, and asked him to ask around and tell me what to use. He sent me the springs, retainers, and locks, and they have worked fine since. I keep a "Spec Sheet" on my website and I posted only pn#3400 on the springs. I guess a little research will pull up springs with that number. Here is a link to my spec sheet. http://scooper77515.fordmaverick.net/specsheet.htm By the way, Underground Parts Warehouse is not a real shop. It is just a cover-up for where I get my parts. I will not disclose the actual shop name. Hence the "underground" portion of the name.
my brother works for a parts distributor so i can get parts at cost and cant tell where i got the parts from so not to ruffle feathers with clients if they where to get p--d off brad
Yup. Same thing. I get them at cost, but don't want to get the "buddy" fired. So it is "Underground Parts Warehouse" as far as you guys are concerned.
I am probaly going to get the motor out of my cousins 93 mustang gt when he puts his other engine in. I figure with a b303 cam gt40's and 1.7 crane rolloer rockers with my headers and intake I should have a stout motor.
By the way, the dyno spit out 265 rwhp and 270 ft/lbs torque with a really nice long and flat torque curve, after a little tuning.
