I am going to be stuck with a Powertrax Locker... Couldn't make up my mind (weighed the pros and cons to death) between the locker and the limited slip. I made the decision finally on the basis that I am not changing my gear ratio right now (though I prolly should) so I ordered the locker from the local speed shop today (should be here Tuesday) because everything I have read and researched says if I can follow instructions that I can put it in myself with common hand tools. Now I just have to hope that it is as good as the reviews say it is adn hope that my loud exhaust and the stereo I plan to put in soo is loud enough to drowned out the clicking and clunking of the locker engaging and disengaging, hehehe.
according to the description i just read on summit it says that the unit eliminates the ratcheting sound. looks like a nice piece. kinda pricey tho http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=PWT%2D92%2D0680%2D2800&N=700+4294908331+4294895172+115&autoview=sku
Keep us updated on how you like it. I'll be looking for something like that for my "Maverick rear axle that's no longer under a Maverick" soon.
I didn't go with that one. I went with this one, which is cheaper and the predecessor to the more expensive "No-Slip" http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PWT-1810-LR&view=32&N=700+4294895172 Here is an article on the difference in the two units http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/powertrax_tj/index.htm I read a bunch of stuff on comparing the two and I just couldn't justify the extra $$$ for the more expensive unit and this article was the nail in the coffin, after seeing the two units side by side like this, and reading what pretty much a pro rock crawler guy had to say. I figure if it'l hold up to the abuse of off road rock crawling I don't think my mild 302 and a couple dozen runs a summer at the local track is going to hurt this thing (even the cheap one) "As you can see, they are very similar, and nearly indistinguishable to the untrained eye. What I established from the advertising and talking to Powertrax was that both lockers performed similarly on the trail, however the Powertrax No-Slip is minimally stronger and smoother operating than the Lock Right. Lock Right units typically make a ratcheting sounds (series of clicking) when turning corners on the pavement, and this characteristic was supposedly eliminated in the No-Slip unit."
sounds good. atleast you did your home work the link you posted was for a 9in tho, i hope thats not the one you ordered through your speed shop
It's definately noisy. I used to run the Lock Right in my old f-150. It works really well. It's definately comparible to the old school detroit lockers. In sharp right hand turns the right tire would typically drag for a moment until the unit would unlock, then it would lock with a fairly loud " bang ". The first time I heard it do that, I thought something broke. When you're going in a straight line it's no different than having a spool.
