All you Transmission guys...Its FIXED!!!! Thank you!!!.....

OK I have a good one for all the trans gurus. I am on my second AOD because the first one had no gears at all. It would not go into gear. This second AOD, now pay attention, WILL NOT bolt to the 302 without cinching the motor tight. I cannot rotate the motor once the trans is bolted up. I have had it in and out 6 times and always checked to make certain the converter was completely installed. I even took the assembly to the tranny guy at work and he is befuddled.

I personally think the case is warped. The trans goes right onto the back of the motor and all the bolts hand tighten, but once all the bolts are tight you cannot rotate the motor. I am ready to give up on the AOD thing and just put the C4 in the car.

    Ideas?

the only thing that would keep the motor from turning would be, the converter is not fully engaged into the front pump, or the converter pilot is not fitting into the crankshaft, or the pump is locked up, at least thats all I can think of.

are the pump gears in backwards not letting the converter into the tapered part?

is the plate that goes between the trans and motor?
is it bound up with the starter motor unbolted?
when you put the nuts on the torque conveter does the conveter get pulled forward to the flex plate or is it already hard against it?
will the motor turn over if you leave the converter nuts off?

As I shall be, all too soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everything worked correctly with the last AOD attached to this motor, except that AOD was junk. So the flexplate is on correctly. The drain plug is in its little hole correctly. The converter in properly seated. The converter, when held against the flexplate, fits perfect. The motor and trans go right together untill the last bolt is tightened and then it wont budge.

I am thinking about maybe adding another engine spacer??????

Spacer plate is there. I even asked the ford guys if ford offered a thicker spacer....no
    Bound up with no starter.
The converter seems to be already hard against the flexplate, before adding the nuts.
Nuts on or off makes no difference.

Keep guessing, we might get this figured out. This would be a fun game if it werent so frustrating.

I bought this trans from a guy that said he had ridden in the car with this trans and it ran great. Apparently the guy was going to drag race the car, thus the reason for ditching the AOD. Supposedly had around 87k on it. I got it for a decent price and drained the fluid, changed the filter and added a Lokar shift lever to try and use the stock column linkage.

I did buy an aftermarket flexplate from ebay and it is a little thicker thanthe original..........but, like I said the last AOD worked with this setup.....no binding.

i would expect there to be some gap between the converter and flexplate that gets taken up when you tighten the nuts.
what conveter is in the new aod?

Thats what I thought also, but its tight.

The converter has writing on it that says "89 Lincoln 5.0" Looks exactly like the converter in the last AOD, And I tried that converter in this new tranny and the same thing happens...binding

Tranny is supposed to be from a 93 mustang, yes its an AOD, not a E40D

If the case is warped you can check that with a strait edge on the bellhousing surface where it meshes to the block.....

So lets rehash what beside the transmission was changed this go around?
