I started taking the front end apart, so could start making an inventory/priority list for rebuilding the Mav. I pulled the radiator away from the fan and tried to crank the car. I got a terrible grinding noise. It was getting late, so I stopped for the night.

I am wondering (hoping) that it's the waterpump, rather than the starter or engine bearing(!)

    -A.P. Out, for now

Check to see if the pulley got bent and is making contact with the water pump body.

Hopefully it isn't anything seriously wrong.

If you have an automatic transmission check the lines that go to the radiator. They could be hitting the crank pully.

Remove all the belts, then start the engine, this for sure will rule out the water pump, alternator, power steering pump or AC pump.
