Now it getting aggrivating, the secondaries on my Holley 4160 carb were flooding..at idle, at all throttle postions and even sitting not running! Today I took off the secondary fuel bowl to check the float level...it was fine, made sure to check for proper needle movement which was fine, and trash in it and found none. Took it for a drive and it was fine for about 6 miles, then flooding again! called Holley tech and he said it's got to be one of three things, fuel pressure, float adjustment or needle and seat, fuel pump is standard run of the mill Ford mechanical (yes I have a good filter on the line) I had just checked the float level and it was good, so needle and seat was my choice, went and bought a rebuild kit, took the needle and seat out of the carb and replaced it, seems to have fixed the flooding but I don't know for sure because I can't drive it! I started down the road and every time I gave it the slightest bit of throttle, it would backfire through the carb! did this constantly if I gave it throttle, it idles great, and out of gear does not backfire upon throttle opening, any suggestions from ya'll? The carb was a new one when I got it and it did for a bit do just fine.
They didnt ask you if your gas cap was on right? I had the same problem! Must be a bent throttle blade.
Mine did that this weekend. I lost the fuel pump last week. Put a new one on Sunday morning. The car wouldn't idle. I took the air filter off and the secondaries still had gas dribbling in to them. I tapped on the secondary bowl with the handle of a screwdriver and it stopped after a bit. I think the needle got sucked up when it ran out of fuel. Good luck.
I would check the accelerator pump, sounds like it needs more fuel to get off idle under load. No matter how many times I had a Holley apart it seems 1/2 the time I messed up getting the cam arm on the pump arm.
I'd replace it with an Edelbrock. But honestly, if you prefer ease of use and drivability over max horsepower, I'd go with Edelbrock.
backfire under acceleration definitely sounds like not enough gas... check to make sure your filter isn't plugged up. Take the filter off and blow through it both ways. If that isn't it start checking anything that might make it run lean.
Could you have knocked off any vacuum lines while working on it? Do you have vacuum advance distributor and is that hose hooked up?
Did you put your float bowl back on right. Your pump arm might mot be hooked up. Also check your gas tank vent is clear. If you have pressure in your tank that will make your carb dribble even when the car is off.
Not even max HP, just a bit quicker throttle response. That's what all the fuss is about over these Holley DP's that everybody's got to have. (...that being said, I have one, and once I got tuned right I prefer it over the Edelbrock I had in there before. But that Edelbrock ran like it was EFI with minimal effort on my part, and wide-open throttle felt no different between the two.)
OMG this forum is a nut house, and I LOVE IT!!! if I need a laugh I can always find it here on the MMB.....now time to go for a ride! Thanks
Well crapola...it's doing it again!! I drove it for a while (about 12 miles) and when I stopped at a red light it started doing it again trying to quit like it's flooding and when I started to go, it was spitting and sputtering along with backfireing....I kinda pumped the gas and finally got it to move, so when I turned onto my road I got pi**ed and floored it...well it took off like nothing was wrong, slowed to turn into my drive and back to the spitting and sputtering. I don't know whats up now, maybe I should just stick to graphic designing.
