hey, new guy here with my first question. Transmission question to be exact....
so i replaced my tranny with a c4 auto from a grenada, and as far as i know/what i've been told, it should work?...

but i turn on my car and cant get it into any gear. someone help??!

i cant remember which tranny oil cooler line goes where, does it matter which goes from the radiator to each hole in the tranny?

grrrrr... so here's what happens. i turn on my car, while its in park, and it makes is usual grumble, but then it revs a little and attempts to go forward... same with any gear. doesnt matter which one i put it in. :/

first things first; in not as tech as a lot of these guys and im sure you'll get some great advice, but without sounding crazy, have you checked that trans out? fluid, modulator, all the external stuff you can get to?

lol its a valid question, sometimes the worst thing you can do is overlook the simple stuff...

i did check the fluid, i'm new to all this so i'm not quite sure what the modulator is...?

what/where/how should i go about checking that?

are the vac lines hooked up at each end? if so, pull it off and check for leaks.

it should move if the modulator is not hooked up.
fluid level is the first thing i would check. to check it the car needs to be idleing in park on a level surface.
if the fluid level is good then there is a good chance that the trans needs a rebuild. it may just need the bands adjusted but i doubt it. there is a chance that you might have the wrong conveter for the trans. there were two different input shafts used on c4s. the early ones had a smaller shaft up around 69-70 and the newer ones used a larger shaft. if you have the small shaft with a larg shaft conveter it wont move.
oh and welcom to the board. pauls is our resident transmission guru here and im sure he will respond sooner or later.

ok. so here's what i've found out. lol since i'm new, dont laugh at me too much lol....

so i learned that i need to check tranny fluid while the beast is on. it did need some. so that fixed the idling problem... but now, even if i go underneath the car and manually put the car in neutral... it wont roll if the car is off... did i put the driveshaft back in wrong? if the car is on, it will only go forward. lol... as cool as that sounds, i'd like to be able to back the thing out of a parking spot.... anything?

if it won't roll in neutral/eng. off then you either have somthing locked up in the trans. or the rear end or brakes are locked up. or poss. somthing not right inside trans when you take it out of park. but you should use the convertor that came with the trans or use a new one for the right application.

ok im a little unclear as to the shifter. does the shifter move the lever on the trans? or is it not working correctly?
you say that you put it in the nutrual postion but you cant roll the car when its off. on or off the car should roll the same when in nutrual.
its pretty hard to put the driveshaft in wrong.
what year grenada did you get that trans from. there is a c5 in the early 80s that is mistaken for a c4. i dont know much about the c5 except that its not worth useing.
it also sounds like you dont have reverse but do have foward gears. im wondering if your shift linkage is not adjusted correctly.

ok. let me explain things a little better...
linkage is disengaged from the shifter...
i am changing gears myself under the car...

engine off... car will roll in every gear except park.

engine on ... car will only roll forward (even if in neutral)...

if i have the car on, it will roll forward in any gear untill i turn it back off...

    :hmmm:
