I've been thinking about the possibility of changing over to a nine inch rear for my 1970 Maverick. Since I don't want to spend heavy for an aftermarket unit I've been looking for an alternative solution. I'm sure many of you have done the swap so I need some ideas. Recently while searching for some information I came across this idea. Referring to a early Mustang rear : "Those rears bolt right in, but are a bit wider. The 65-66 Stang 9" is going to be outragously expensive. You do know how they made those particular 9" rears, right??? They took the 8" rear and cut the tubes off the housing and welded the center portion of a common 9" rear housing into the tubes. Then they stabbed the 28 spline 8" axles right back into a 28 spline 9" chunk. This gave them the stock brakes, axles, and u-bolts, while transplanting the 9" chunk into the 8" housing. Make sense? This is exactly what Ford and Shelby did in 65-66. They call it the "HiPo" 9", and they go for better than a grand for a core. You can make your Maverick 8" into a Maverick 9" the exact same way for roughly 200 bux. At least that is the going rate here, if you have a shop do it. It can be done nearly for free if you have the ability to do it yourself." What do you think of this idea? Thanks Jim M
thats a great way of doing it. just make sure that it is streight and that the housing ends are aligned with the center of the carrier. this is done with a bar and some inserts that go in the to the case that the bar can slide through and the axle ends of the housing.
