I'm in the process of changing out my old 8" rear for a new 9". After getting the new rear end up on the the leaf springs I encountered a problem: the rear U-joint is too narrow for the new rear end. I think the difference was 0.7 centimetres/7millimetres, I'm not really sure how much that comes to in inches Since I'm not exactly the first one to do this swap, I'm pretty sure someone has to experienced the same problem as me? Is it possible to just swap out the U-joint for one that's wide enough, if they are possible to get?
"Is it possible to just swap out the U-joint for one that's wide enough, if they are possible to get?" they make a U-joint to fit . it will be ...one side the caps will be larger than the other. someone will have a # for you shortly. a good parts store can find it for you...maverick 8" on one side and 9" on the other... I know this isn't all you need but at least you know they do make one to fit...:Handshake you can also buy the large cap U-joint and a small one and swap two of the caps...then you will have two of the u-joints you need... I used one of these when i put the...700R4 yoke on my C-4 8" driveshaft.
They make several "combination U joints" but which one he needs will be up to him to decide, as he's the one holding the parts. There are also different length joints (across the joint) in addition to different diameter cups. He can get on Summit Racing's website and look up the various combo joints and their dimensions
If all I need as a pair of new caps, I could probably get them at a local store tomorrow already! Should be an easier and cheaper fix than I feared, thanks
You wouldn't happen to know what kind of cars that might have u-joint caps that will fit my rear end and driveshaft? I bought 2 sets of u-joints for Mustang(not sure what year, but one was probably for the 71-73 models), and none of those sets and any larger caps I have no idea what car my rear end is from but the yoke on the diff measures 3.5 inches from lip to lip, or whatever you would call it The u-joint that's on my driveshaft now is 7mm (about 1/4inch or so) shorter than that..
are you sure on the 3.5"? my bet would be it's 3.622 which would make it a 1330 u-joint. you need to measure the width as well as the diameter of the caps. have a look here what is available: http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/HTML Measure/UJ ID Guide.html with the measurements and the correct type yoke, go to summitracing.com to look up some part numbers in the drivetrain department. i bet you local store can order you the u-joint, i was able to get them for my versailles 9" rear here in germany, too.
You could probably be very right on the 3.622 part, I measured in metric and found out it was pretty close to 3.5" so I figured that was what it was From looking at the link you posted, it seems you are correct I think i probably have the 1310 joint on mine now and that I need the 1330 joint for it to fit. Didn't seem like there was much difference in the length of the caps, so it seems I probably need to change the entire U-joint?
The difference in the cap diameter can be subtle too. You need to use a set of dial calipers to measure the cap diameter. It wouldn't hurt to use one to measure the distance across the caps too. 9 inch yokes were made for 1310, 1330 and 1350 joints.
sounds like you need a 1310 x 1330 combination u joint http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p49...30_series_combination_u_joint...neapco_g.html
I guess so The "body" of the u-joint I have on my driveshaft is about 10 millimeters slimmer than both the mustang ones I bought. My joint was about 40mm, while the mustang ones was 50mm.. So from the pictures on the link tody posted I'm pretty sure that what I have is the 1310 and both the mustang ones are 1330's.. However, since my joint was so slim I don't think I can get it to work with just new caps? I'm guessing I'll have to change out my entire u-joint with one that's a combination of 1310(to fit the driveshaft) and 1330 to fit the diff? *Saw the link that Joe Dirt posted now, guess that's what I need to get it to work
here's the part numbers from summit. i guess you can get the moog ones at a local car store. at least they should be able to order it for you. http://www.summitracing.com/search/...Joint-Style/1310-1330-conversion/?Ns=Rank|Asc
Well thanks for this guys..mines sitting waiting to be put together and i never realized i was going to run into this problem so i went out with the digi. caliper and got the 1330's measurement. looks like i need a 1310-1330 as well.
Got the right joint from a local store yesterday and got it mounted into the driveshaft today, should be able to take the car off the jackstands in a couple of weeks hopefully
