I also noted that the left rear shock is rubbing the rear end housing?? Is this an install problem or possiable wrong rear/shock combo???

If you cannot get a socket on the 2 bottom nuts on the center section it is a 9".

1970 cars did not come with staggered shocks. It is likely someone installed the bottom plates from a staggered shock car which is causing the shock to contact the housing.

All Comets had an 8" rear. Very early 70 model Mavericks had a 7.5 but the rest of them were 8s.

I don't think it is the bottom shock plates that is the problem....I think it is the upper mounts. If the car was originally a 7.5" rear axle and did not have the staggered shocks....then I THINK the upper mounts would be different.

The upper mounts are different. Does anyone know if they can just be swapped with the staggered brackets?

When I did the swap on my 70 I installed Lakewood Traction bars which replaced the lower plates and came with both front and rear position shock mounts.

I don't know if the top mounts can be swapped or not....but I would think something could be "fabricated" and made to work. I can't imagine it would be that difficult.

I suggest you come out the the MCCI Roundup Nationals the weekend of July 27-28 in Washington D.C. area and look at all the cars and I am sure we can figure something out.
