i bought an 8 inch rear end today from a junkyard. it is from a 79 granada.:bananaman

it looks like it is in good shape...the axles rotate and the yoke spins....no sticking at all..and it feels nice and smooth...for 2.79 gears...they gotta go

Now i want to fix it up...get it all ready
to take the member out, do i need to remove the axles first...?

there is a weird looking hunk of metal on the lower front of the rear end that isnt on my maverick's rear end...looks like a mount...but on the bottom..??

    not sure what it is....

    any ideas?

Yes, the axles have to come out. There are 4 bolts on each axle. There is an access hole in the end of each axle. You can turn the axle and line it up with each bolt. Take a deep 9/16th socket on an extension and they are very easy to remove. Sometimes the axle will pop out pretty easy, sometimes they need a little help such as a slide hammer or similar tool. After the axles are slid out a few inches the center housing will come out with no problems. Be aware that this unit is very heavy in case you are doing it laying on the ground.

    jerry,
are you implying that his "rear end" might be twisted? is this something that could have happened driving through the "disco" era? :bouncy: :biglaugh:

I found one in a '76 Mercury Monarch for $70. I'm thinking about getting it so I can push the rear wheels out 1/2" on each side...

Just for clarification, are you sure it is an 8in? Have seen those vibration dampers on the 7.5 and 8.8 but never on an 8in. Does it have the drop out center or have a cover on the back? Just wondering about some things I may have to learn about.

it has the front loader style.....and i just checked it again....and it is a 10 inch drum and 5x4.5" lug pattern

i dont think its a 8.8 but then again...there is only this on the tag

    WDW-AF 9AA
    2 79 8 551A

it has 10 inch drums and 5 lug 4.5 inch spacing

and it has the vibration dampner.....it is a front loader and has 3 bolts on top and bottom and 2 bolts on each side of the member

please let me know what i have....the junkyard said it was a 28 spline 8 inch rear end

Yes it is an 8". When you get a chance measure the length of it vs your Maverick rear, I'd like to hear the results. My Lincoln rear is wider but I think that is because of the rotors. I'm not sure if the Granada drum rear is wider or not.

and one more question.... will my master cylinder be able to handle the new 10 inch drums on the new rea end...my rear end has 9 inch drums currently,...

will the master cylinder handle that?

im not sure if this is going to help anyone..

the 79 granada rear end is 49.75 inches from inside drum to inside drum
the rear end on the maverick is over 50 inches inside drum to inside drum
i am sure that is because the drums are thicker on the 79 rear end

now the drums on the maverick are much smalled and i am sure that the rear end will fit...but over all lenght wont be easy since i will need to remove the wheels...and i dont have the time to do that right now..

Doesn't make sense that the Granada rear would be narrower than the Maverick. The front track of a Granada is wider than a Maverick (the frame is wider) so I would think that the rear would be wider also...

Granadas use the same master cylinder as the late model Mavericks...

mine isnt a late model.... its a 71

so i guess i can add a new master cylinder to the parts upgrade list now that its a 302

i want power brakes....but i dont want the hassle of tracking everything down and running accesories off the engine

Your master cylinder will probably work fine...
